Motor ‘Sickle’
SEPT. 5—The Pittsburgh Players, Kings and Queens Motorcycle Club will host the Second Annual Motor ‘Sickle’ Ride for Sickle Cell Disease Awareness from 11 a.m.-6p.m. at the Schenley Park Vietnam Veterans Pavilion. There will be food, fun, entertainment, Chinese auctions and raffles. There will also be free sickle cell screenings from 12-3 p.m. and a ride from 12-1:30 p.m. Registration begins at 11 a.m. The cost is $20 for riders and $10 for non-riders. Public tours
SEPT. 5—The Pittsburgh History & Landmark Foundation, The Urban Redevelopment Authority of Pittsburgh and Mainstreets Pittsburgh will host “Walking Our Mainstreets” from 2-3:30 p.m. For 10 consecutive Saturday afternoons a walking tour will highlight a different Pittsburgh mainstreet business district. Guides from PHLF, Mainstreets Pittsburgh, and other community groups will discuss neighborhood history and current work and future plans for each main street. Some of the neighborhoods to be visited are Mt. Washington, Lawrenceville, Bloomfield, Downtown, North Side and East Liberty. The tours are free, but reservations are required due to limited space. Bowl-a-thon
SEPT. 5—The Santonio Holmes III & Long Foundation will host a Celebrity Bowl-a-Thon at 4 p.m. at FunFest Entertainment Center, 2525 Freeport Rd., Pittsburgh. The bowl-a-thon will benefit charities dealing with work in the area of sickle cell. September is Sickle Cell Awareness month. Registration begins at 3:30 p.m. and the deadline is Sept. 1. Homeownership workshop
SEPT. 9—Fifth-Third Bank will host a Homeownership Mobile from 12-4 p.m. at the Human Services Center Corp., 519 Penn Ave., Turtle Creek. This is a mobile bus that doubles as a mobile classroom to provide credit counseling, financial literacy, homeownership and foreclosure prevention. There will also be free credit reports, one-on-one counseling and more. The bus will stop at various locations on various dates and times. It will run through Sept. 12. SEPT. 13—Your Sister’s Project will host the Grandparents Day Dinner from 7-11 p.m. at the Senator John Heinz History Center, 1212 Smallman St., Strip District. The theme is “Enhancing Our Third Age.” The guest speaker will be civil rights activist and comedian Dick Gregory. Selected grandparents will be recognized and receive a special award. World premiere
SEPT. 17—The August Wilson Center for African-American Culture will host their World Premiere Tribute Ceremony & Celebration at 5:30 p.m. at 980 Liberty Ave., Cultural District. The Center that bears August Wilson’s name honors his legacy with a tribute ceremony and celebrates its opening as the newest contribution to the cultural landscape. The evening’s entertainment includes the Sphinx Chamber Orchestra, young African-American and Latino musicians performing masterpieces by Bach, Vivaldi and Mozart, as well as works by composers of color, such as Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson, George Theophilus Walker and Michael Abels. SEPT. 22—The National Council on Urban Peace, Justice & Empowerment will host the International Peace, Justice & Empowerment Summit from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at Hosanna House, 807 Wallace Ave., Wilkinsburg. This is an action alert town hall forum that will discuss globalization, economic justice, prison industrial complex, urban and international policy, health care, and reparations.
