Homeownership workshop

SEPT. 9—Fifth-Third Bank will host a Homeownership Mobile from 12-4 p.m. at the Human Services Center Corp., 519 Penn Ave., Turtle Creek. This is a mobile bus that doubles as a mobile classroom to provide credit counseling, financial literacy, homeownership and foreclosure prevention. There will also be free credit reports, one-on-one counseling and more. The bus will stop at various locations on various dates and times. It will run through Sept. 12. Housing seminar

SEPT. 10—The Mon Valley Initiative will host a Housing Seminar from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at 475 E. Waterfront Dr., Homestead. Participants who successfully complete the Housing and Urban Development curriculum will receive a certificate, which is required to obtain community development mortgage loan from local lenders. Community appreciation

SEPT. 12—Pennsylvania State Rep. Jake Wheatley Jr. will host the 7th Annual Community Appreciation Day from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. at Kennard Field, corner of Reed and Kirkpatrick streets, Hill District. Diabetes expo

SEPT. 12—The Pittsburgh office of the American Diabetes Association will host a Diabetes Expo from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center, 1000 Fort Duquesne Blvd., Downtown. There are activities for everyone including free health screenings, cooking and fitness demonstrations and workshops. One of the workshops, Diabetes in the African American Community, provides insight and encouragement on how to cope with this disease and still enjoy a healthy, fun lifestyle. Admission is free. Grandparents award

SEPT. 13—Your Sister’s Project will host the Grandparents Day Dinner from 7-11 p.m. at the Senator John Heinz History Center, 1212 Smallman St., Strip District. The theme is “Enhancing Our Third Age.” The guest speaker will be civil rights activist and comedian Dick Gregory. Selected grandparents will be recognized and receive a special award. This is an opportunity to honor parents, grandparents and friends affiliated with churches, mosques, synagogues and various organizations. Survivors event

SEPT. 15—The Allegheny Cancer Center and AstraZeneca will host the Many Faces of Cancer event from 6-8 p.m. at Allegheny Cancer Center, 320 E. North Ave., North Side. This is a national program to educate and celebrate breast cancer survivors. There will be leading medical experts who will address a range of survivorship issues. Parkinson’s cruise

SEPT. 16—The Allegheny Neurological and the American Parkinson’s Disease Association will host a Parkinson’s Disease Cruise from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Gateway Clipper Majestic, 350 W. Station Square Dr., Station Square. The cruise is designed to bring the latest information about Parkinson’s to families affected by the disease in the Pittsburgh area. Guests include actress Holly Robinson-Peete of the HollyRod Foundation and Susan Baser of Allegheny General Hospital. The event is free and registration is required. World premier

SEPT. 17—The August Wilson Center for African-American Culture will host their World Premier Tribute Ceremony & Celebration at 5:30 p.m. at 980 Liberty Ave., Cultural District. The center that bears August Wilson’s name honors his legacy with a tribute ceremony and celebrates its opening as the newest contribution to the cultural landscape. The evening’s entertainment includes the Sphinx Chamber Orchestra, young African-American and Latino musicians performing masterpieces by Bach, Vivaldi and Mozart, as well as works by composers of color, such as Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson, George Theophilus Walker and Michael Abels. Insurance training

SEPT. 21—A For the People Insurance Agency Inc. will host Insurance Training Institute at 2514 Wylie Ave., Hill District. Summit

SEPT. 22—The National Council on Urban Peace, Justice & Empowerment will host the International Peace, Justice & Empowerment Summit from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at Hosanna House, 807 Wallace Ave., Wilkinsburg. This is an action alert town hall forum that will discuss globalization, economic justice, prison industrial complex, urban and international policy, health care, and reparations. The keynote speakers will be Ron Walters and John A. Powell. The co-conveners will be T. Rashad Byrdsong and Amir Khalid Sammad. The summit will last two days. Awards celebration

SEPT. 26—The Legacy Arts Project Inc. will host the 4th Annual Keepers of the Flame Awards Celebration at 7 p.m. at the Kelly-Strayhorn Theater, 5941 Penn Ave., East Liberty. The theme is “Taking the Grass Back to the Roots.” This is a moving and memorable evening of dance, storytelling, poetry, song and drumming. Dr. Vernell A.
