Parkinson’s cruise

SEPT. 16—The Allegheny Neurological and the American Parkinson’s Disease Association will host a Parkinson’s Disease Cruise from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Gateway Clipper Majestic, 350 W. Station Square Dr., Station Square. The cruise is designed to bring the latest information about Parkinson’s to families affected by the disease in the Pittsburgh area. Guests include actress Holly Robinson-Peete of the HollyRod Foundation and Susan Baser of Allegheny General Hospital. The event is free and registration is required. Free screenings

SEPT. 17—The Center for Minority Health at the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health will host the 8th Annual Take a Health Professional to the People Day from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at local barbershops and salons around Pittsburgh. Ten local salons and barbershops will have health professionals at their location to provide free blood pressure screenings and education on cancer, diabetes, hypertension and HIV/AIDS. The event is to build trust, promote health and prevent disease in the African-American community. Some of the shops are Bat’s Barber Shop, Big Tom’s Full Service Barber Shop, Center of Attraction, The Natural Choice, Willie Tee’s Barbershop and Ms. Ida’s Epiphany Barbershop.For more information, call Mario Browne at 412-624-9472.

Health fair

SEPT. 19—The Us Too Terah L. Brown Jr. Pittsburgh East Chapter will host a Health Fair from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. at the Church of the Holy Cross, 7507 Kelly St., Homewood. The health fair is in observance of Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. There will be free prostate cancer, blood pressure and cholesterol screenings. There will also be massages and health information. Children’s story time

SEPT. 19—The McKeesport Heritage Center will host a Children’s Story Time at 11 a.m. at 1832 Arboretum Dr., McKeesport. The story time is a part of the Helen Richey Centennial Celebration. Junior race

SEPT. 20—Dollar Bank will host the 2009 14th Annual Junior Great Race at 12 p.m. at Point State Park, Downtown. Children ages 12 and under will participant in various races. There will be a one-mile Family Fun Run race, a diaper dash and a 50 Yard Tot Trot. There will also be face painting, free snacks and fun activities. Registration is requested. Registered children will receive an official T-shirt, a medal for their efforts, a treat from the Spaghetti Warehouse and Smiley cookies from Eat ‘N Park. Insurance training

SEPT. 21—For the People Insurance Agency Inc. will host Insurance Training at 2514 Wylie Ave., Hill District. They will offer a four-day intensive training for people interested in selling insurance. Home workshop

SEPT. 21—Dollar Bank and the Pittsburgh Housing Development Association Inc. will host a Home Buying Workshop at 6 p.m. at the Wilkinsburg Borough Building, 2nd Floor, 605 Ross Ave., Wilkinsburg. Attendees will learn about grant money for closing costs, affordable mortgage and down payment options, program for public housing residents and renters, counseling programs to strengthen and restore credit and a free credit report. Summit

SEPT. 22—The National Council on Urban Peace, Justice & Empowerment will host the International Peace, Justice & Empowerment Summit from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at Hosanna House, 807 Wallace Ave., Wilkinsburg. This is an action alert town hall forum that will discuss globalization, economic justice, prison industrial complex, urban and international policy, health care, and reparations. The keynote speakers will be Ron Walters and John A. Powell. The co-conveners will be Rashad Byrdsong and Amir Khalid Sammad. The summit will last two days. Awards celebration

SEPT. 26—The Legacy Arts Project Inc. will host the 4th Annual Keepers of the Flame Awards Celebration at 7 p.m. at the Kelly-Strayhorn Theater, 5941 Penn Ave., East Liberty. The theme is “Taking the Grass Back to the Roots.” This is a moving and memorable evening of dance, storytelling, poetry, song and drumming. Dr. Vernell A.
