Schenley (2-1, 2-1) was met with heavy resistance by Brashear (2-1, 2-1) as they hoped to join Oliver in a tie for first place in the City League. Those aspirations quickly came to a halt as Brashear’s fast start on special teams helped to solidify a 36-6 victory and the first loss for the Spartans Friday night at Cupples Stadium.

Brashear’s Jamil Smith returned the opening kick 91yards for a touchdown. Then, Manny Reed, also a Brashear sophomore returned a 58-yard punt to the end zone on the ensuing possession.
“Any time you can start a game that way, you hope you can win it,” Brashear coach Rick Murphy said. “Our special teams came up pretty big.”
Also in the first quarter, Schenley’s DeAndre Black caught a 9-yard strike from quarterback Calvin Beck that cut the lead to 12-6. He finished with three grabs for 63 yards. Beck completed 8 passes for 88 yards and was intercepted twice.

Unrattled by Schenley’s answer, Brashear’s quarterback Henri Chatman threw for two touchdowns—a 19-yarder to Eric Lynch and a 48-yard bomb to fellow senior Bruce Patterson. He completed 5 passes on 10 attempts for 82 yards.
In addition to his touchdown catch, Patterson had 59 rushing yards on 12 attempts. Brashear’s other scoring came on a safety in the second half and a 54-yard interception return by Jammal Simmons.
“We played well,” said Murphy. “We managed to really control the ball and the line of scrimmage.”
Don’t miss what is sure to be a dog fight at Cupples when Schenley takes on Oliver (3-0, 3-0) this Friday at 3:30 p.m. An Oliver loss and wins by Brashear and Perry will cause a four-way tie for first place in District 8.
Peabody (2-1, 2-0) 60, Langley (0-3, 0-3) 20
If you wish upon a star, perhaps Peabody’s Jaylen Coleman may fall out of the sky. He had 13 carries for 194 yards and 2 touchdowns. Yet, be advised—that was not the only storyline in this one.
Peabody had this offensive outburst without their regular starter at quarterback, sophomore Dontae Forte, who is out due to injury. Forte’s backup, DeVaughn Jamison, however, didn’t look too challenged as he hooked up with LaMont Blackwell on two touchdowns of 24 and 25 yards. He completed all four of his passes to Blackwell on 9 attempts for a total of 79 yards. Peabody added to its total with scores from Jermain Gray (4 yard run), a Jamison 10-yard scamper, and a 1-yarder by Dan Burrell.

This was too bad for Langley and its quarterback, Shawn Smith who also played great. He completed 13 passes for 183 yards on 18 attempts with 2 touchdowns and an interception. He hooked up with Tyrone Smith for a 13-yard score and later on did the same with Jermaine Robinson from 33 out. Langley also scored on a 24-yard interception return for a touchdown by Christian Alexander in the second half.
Perry (2-1, 2-1) 42, Carrick (1-2, 1-2) 12
Richard Lowry and Greg McGhee combined for four rushing scores to take care of Carrick on Thursday. This was despite a nice rushing performance by Carrick’s Rasheed McKamey of 13 carries for 94 yards.
Carrick was plagued by turnovers as their usually steady quarterback Ryan Roeper threw two costly picks. He finished with four completions on 13 attempts for 58 yards, along with two touchdowns. These two scores were on grabs of 16 and 25 to JaJuan Thomas, who is proving to be one of the most entertaining performers in the city. On the other side of things, they lost two fumbles to Perry in which one was returned 70 yards for a touchdown by Gerald Sherrill in the first half.
Dion Mathews rounded out the scoring for Perry as he returned a kick in the third quarter 60 yards for a touchdown.
Oliver 26, Allderdice 0 (0-3, 0-3)
It just doesn’t get better for Allderdice who continues a 14-game losing streak. Oliver astounded Allderdice’s defense with 237 total yards. Allderdice had an anemic 28 total yards offense and destroyed their chance of winning with 10 penalties for 70 yards.
Dante Jeter and Tyree Mathis defined this victory for the Bears, combining on 28 carries for 126 yards; 49 of which belonged to Jeter on 10 carries with an 18-yard touchdown scamper. Mathis added 79 yards on 18 carries. Jeter also completed three passes on six attempts and a touchdown. He connected with David Marshall on an 18-yarder in the first half.
The other scores came on a safety by Oliver’s Shakil Brown in the first quarter and a 22-yard fumble recovery that was returned for a touchdown by JaQuet Foster.
