Opening performance

Pittsburgh Public Theater presents Ella at 8 p.m. at the O’Reilly Theatre, 621 Penn Ave., Cultural District. This is a bio-musical of Ella Fitzgerald. It is directed by Rob Ruggiero and stars Tina Fabrique, as Ella. The show will run through Nov. 1 and tickets are $40-$60 and $15 for ages 26 and younger and students. Jazz jam

CJ’s Restaurant & Lounge presents “The Roger Humphries & RH Factor Jazz Jam Session” at 8 p.m. at 2901-2911 Penn Ave., Strip District. There will be live jazz and fun every Thursday night. Friday 2

Gallery crawl

The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust Department of Education and Community Engagement presents a Gallery Crawl from 5:30-9p.m. This event is for the Allegheny Regional Asset District’s RADical Days. This fall’s program features an exciting array of venues throughout the Cultural District and an eclectic mix of visual art, dance, music and more. Individuals are welcome to go from gallery to gallery and visit each one of them for free. There will also be a concert at Agnes R. Katz Plaza in the Cultural District featuring SOUL POWER with Fred Wesley and the JBs. DJ Stephan Broadus will spin the vinyls during the breaks. This is free and open to the public. Smooth jazz

Club Duo presents Smooth Jazz Friday’s from 8 p.m.-2 a.m. at the Holiday Inn Select, 100 Lytton Ave., Oakland. This is a mix of smooth jazz featuring the Smooth Groove Band and DJ Sly Jock. Roland Ford will also get the evening started with line dancing. There will be a complimentary buffet and drinks. This is an over-30 event and patrons cannot wear timberlands, jeans and sneakers. Saturday 3

Heritage parade

The African-American Heritage Parade Association Inc. presents the African American Heritage Day Parade at 11 a.m. at the Mellon Arena, 66 Mario Lemieux Pl., Uptown. It will begin at Mellon Arena and conclude at the new August Wilson Center on Liberty Avenue, Cultural District. There will be performances by the Legacy Art Project, the Hill Dance Academy Theatre, the Hip Hop on LOCK Project, Umoja African Arts Company and Artistree. Sunday night jazz

The Pittsburgh Jazz Society presents The Sunday Night Jazz Concerts from 7-10 p.m. at the Rhythm House Café, 3029 Washington Pike, Bridgeville. The featured entertainer will be the Kenny Blake Trio and DUQ’s Tony Mowod will be the host. For more information, call 412-221-5010.

Jam session

AVA Lounge presents a Weekly Live Jazz/Jam Session with The Interval Trio & Friends at 9 p.m. at 126 S. Highland Ave., East Liberty. Tuesday 6

Film screening

The University of Pittsburgh presents the Film Screening of Anne Aghion’s “My Neighbor, My Killer” at 6:30 p.m. at the Frick Fine Arts Auditorium, 650 Schenley Dr., Oakland. This event is part of the Ford Institute for Human Security’s Speaker Series. This is a feature-length film on the Gacaca in Rwanda. Wednesday 7

Part three

The Carnegie Museum of Art presents “Documenting Our Past: The Teenie Harris Archive Project, Part Three” from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. at 4400 Forbes Ave., Oakland. It features photographs selected by a guest curator, Charles A. “Little Teenie” Harris, the oldest son of “Teenie” Harris. In addition to the images selected, the exhibition features the 50 winning photographs from the “One Shot ‘Teenie Harris Photo Contest.” The exhibit runs to Jan. 31, 2010.
