Business workshop

OCT. 1—The Saint Vincent College Small Business Development Center will host “Doing Business with the Commonwealth” from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. at Saint Vincent College, 300 Fraser Purchase Rd., Latrobe. The Pennsylvania Department of General Services will present this workshop and will provide the necessary information to anyone interested in doing business with the government. Topics will include: locating state contracting opportunities, how the state purchases goods and services, using state contracting to “grow” a small business, and state programs to help small businesses make use of contracting and subcontracting opportunities. The workshop will also cover certification of minority-owned and women-owned businesses. The owners of such businesses are especially urged to attend. Professional networking

OCT. 1—Jessica Lee will host “Entrepreneurial Thursdays” from 5:30-8 p.m. at Little E’s, 949 Liberty Ave., Downtown. This is a professional networking event with live jazz/R&B music. The theme is “Entertainer Entrepreneurs.” There is a $10 cover charge with a full bar and dinner selections. Business casual is the attire. No jeans or tennis shoes. Anniversary symposium

OCT. 2—The YWCA of Greater Pittsburgh will host the 140th Anniversary Symposium from 8:30 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Westin Hotel, 1000 Penn Ave., Downtown. There theme is “Women Who Dare: Do They Make a Difference?” The symposium will feature presentations by Donna Brazile, Nina Totenberg and Lilly Ledbetter. NAWBO day

OCT. 2—The National Association of Women Business Owners of Greater Pittsburgh will host their Annual NAWBO Day from 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Radisson Greentree Hotel, 101 Radisson Dr., Greentree. This is a day for business owners, entrepreneurs and those thinking about starting a business. There will be a trade show, numerous speakers, a panel discussion and networking. Registration is requested. The cost is $60 for NAWBO owners and alliance members and $70 for non-members. The cost includes a continental breakfast and lunch. Job fair

OCT. 3—TiE Pittsburgh will host a Pittsburgh Job and Opportunity Fair from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. at Carnegie Mellon University, the University Center, 5000 Forbes Ave., Oakland. Exhibitors will have information on the services they offer to improve on opportunities to grow one’s business and employment opportunities at their organizations. OCT. 8—The Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh will host their Business Program Series from 12:15-1 p.m. at the Downtown and Business branch, 612 Smithfield St. The topic is “Retire When You Want to Regardless of the Stock Market.” Lee Feldman, president of the Association of Counselors for Equity Securities Inc., will present this workshop. He will discuss the essentials of financial planning and how to choose the right tools to achieve your retirement goals in spite of the market’s ups and downs. POWERtalk

OCT. 10—Council 8 of POWERtalk International will host a meeting at 9 a.m. at East Liberty Presbyterian Church, 116 S. Highland Ave., East Liberty. POWERtalk International is a self-development organization providing coaching in effective speaking, listening and leadership skills. This theme for this meeting is health. Scholarship gala

OCT. 10—The Pittsburgh Chapter of the National Black MBA Association will host its Annual Scholarship and Recognition Gala from 6 p.m.-12 a.m. at the Pittsburgh Athletic Association, 4215 Fifth Ave., Oakland. The theme is “Connect-Reconnect.” This is the chapter’s signature event held to award scholarships to high school seniors, undergraduates and graduate students. The keynote speaker will be Candi Castleberry-Singleton, chief inclusion and diversity officer for UPMC, and Darieth Chisolm, WPXI anchorwoman, will be the mistress of ceremonies.
