The seedings are final in the City League as all top four teams were victorious in their final regular season matchups. The Schenley Spartans have secured the league’s top seed in its post-season and will take on Brashear Nov. 6 at 7 p.m. for the second of two semi-final games. The other contest will include the number two seed Oliver against its North side rival, No. 3 Perry Nov. 5 at 7 p.m.; both games are at Cupples Stadium.

“Obviously, It’s been good,” said Schenley head coach Jason Bell. “We wanted to turn the corner, which has been a problem for us in the past, and this time we plan to actually get to where we need to be this year (in the championship).”
On their way to the top seed they’ve gone on a five-game winning streak. Their previous loss was back on Sept. 18, losing 36-6 to defending champion Brashear. They will rely on their running game, which is led by one of the league’s best, senior tailback Jerome Mathews. Junior DeAndre Black, known as an explosive playmaker on both sides of the ball, will lead the way for the Spartans.

“Our key guy is Mathews,” said Bell. “He’s been a four-year starter for me and we’ve always expected big things out of him. Black makes big plays for us as well. The biggest thing for us to be successful (especially on defense) is the play of our secondary. If they play well, it will cause things to happen for us up front and we can use the athletes that we have on our (defensive) line to make key plays.”
Schenley was in action against last past Friday when they blew out Carrick, 58-16. Black scored on a 70-yard touchdown pass from Calvin Beck. He also scored on a 98-yard interception return. Mathews added on by scoring on three touchdown runs of 6, 7, and 10 yards on their way to clinching this year’s regular season crown.

Oliver 22, Peabody 14
Oliver’s quarterback Dante Jeter scored on a 1-yard run in the first half. He added on a 24-yard touchdown pass to Martise Smith to lead the Bears past Peabody to finish as this season’s City League runner-up. Smith had a touchdown pass of his own to David Marshall for 22 yards, in the fourth quarter.

Peabody surrendered 16 fourth quarter points to Oliver after leading 8-6 in the first quarter. Jaylen Coleman scored on an 84-yard run and Dontae Forte connected with Brennan Duckett for a 10-yard touchdown pass for the Highlanders.
Perry 42, Langley 12
Once again, Perry’s Richard Lowry shined in a dominating performance as the Commodores slipped past Langley to cap-off a winless season for the Mustangs. Lowry carried the ball 10 times for 192 yards and a touchdown.
Perry’s Aaron Patterson came up big for its offense, with three touchdowns—two rushing and one receiving. Junior quarterback Greg McGhee completed 7 of 10 passes for 133 yards with two touchdowns and an interception.
Westinghouse 13, Allderdice 0
The Bulldogs of Westinghouse earned their third win of the season. They scored on a 27-yard touchdown run by Ron Tyler and a 48-yard fumble recovery by Darrell Cosby.
