Mentoring program
NOV. 11—Northside Urban Pathways’ Benefiting African-American Males and Minorities will host Women in Sync Everywhere at 7:30 a.m. at the Rivers Club, One Oxford Center, 301 Grant St., Downtown. This is the school’s second mentoring program. It pairs young African-American females with other Pittsburgh women. Amanda Green and Carmen Robinson will co-host event. Reservations are required. Justice service
NOV. 12—The American Civil Liberties Union of Pennsylvania Greater Pittsburgh Chapter will host a Juvenile Justice Series at 7 p.m. at the Hill House, Conference Room B, 1835 Centre Ave., Hill District. Every month the organization will examine the impact the criminal justice system is having on the region’s youths. This month’s topic is “The Youth PROMISE Act.” This is about the Youth Prison Reduction through Opportunities, Mentoring, Intervention, Support and Education Act, which seeks to give new hope to young people caught up in the cycle of violence by investing in evidence-based and community-oriented programs that support children and their families. The discussion will be led by Khari Moseley, director of Green Economy Initiatives at GTECH Strategies and a former national political director for the League of Young Voters. Fund-raiser
NOV. 15—The American Association for Lost Children will host a “Smash the Bengals” Fund-raiser at 12 p.m. at Todd’s By the Bridge, 5200 Walnut St., North Versailles. This is a car- smashing fund-raiser to support AAFLC’s missing child rescue services. Individuals can come on Nov. 14 and spray paint the junker car before it gets destroyed. Justice awards
NOV. 16—The YWCA of Greater Pittsburgh will host their 2009 Racial Justice Awards at 6:30 p.m. at the Westin Hotel, 1000 Penn Ave., Downtown. Brenda Waters of KDKA will be the mistress of ceremonies. This year’s winners will be Grace Robinson, Laurence Glassco, Nueve Lunas, Lisa Thorpe-Vaughn, Father Regis Ryan and WQED. Awardee dinner
NOV. 17—The Salvation Army will host their 2009 Allegheny County Doing the Most Good Dinner at the Sheraton Station Square, 300 W. Station Square, Station Square. This dinner is to honor those who help to make their efforts possible. The guest speaker will be former Pittsburgh Steeler Lynn Swann. Other honorees include the Pittsburgh Penguins, Wendy’s Restaurant and Tom and Sandra Usher. Stephen Cropper of WTAE-TV Channel 4 will serve as the evening’s master of ceremonies. Housing seminar
NOV. 21—The Mon Valley Initiative will host a Purchase Housing Workshop from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at 303/305 E. 8th Ave., Homestead. The Mon Valley Initiative is a non-profit leader in the development of homeownership. All participants who successfully complete this Housing and Urban Development curriculum will receive a certificate, which is required to obtain community development mortgage loans from local lenders. Benefit gala
NOV. 21—The African American Heritage House of the Homewood Art Museum will host a Benefit Gala at 5:30 at the Churchill Country Club, Beulah Rd., Churchill. There will be a silent auction with memorabilia from Pittsburgh sports teams, artwork and more. The guest auctioneer will be L.C. Greenwood of the Pittsburgh Steelers. NOV. 21—Iota Phi Foundation of the Iota Phi Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity will host a Recognition Dinner at 7 p.m. at the Rodef Shalom, 4905 Fifth Ave., Oakland. The foundation honors men who demonstrate superior leadership in the areas of Business, Medicine, Education and Community. This year’s honorees are Keith Key, Dr. Leon R. Food drive
ONGOING—The Dinwiddie Community Alliance will host a Food Drive from 8 a.m.-8 p.m. at the James F. Henry Hill House Center lobby, 1835 Centre Ave., Hill District.
