Speak Out…What is your reaction to the possible closing of 16 school buildings?

A recent report to the Pittsburgh School Board suggested that 16 school buildings may have to be shut down for economic reasons. We asked Pittsburghers what they thought. Here’s what you said.

“It’s the sign of the times. It may be about money but you’re moving students from one area to another where those people didn’t particually like each other and it’s been like that for generations.”

“I think they should have thought about the situation before they started building new stadiums and the casino. That money could have gone back into rebuilding the schools. So many issues are going to arise, like the territorial things.

“I think the closing of schools isn’t a bad idea. It’s going to save money. Also, I feel the territorial beefs aren’t as strong as they were in the past. I don’t think the kids are going to get into that much confrontation now as they would have 10, 12 years ago.

“I think that it’s very horrible that no children should be left behind and we’re leaving behind a lot of children; we’re housing them together like hordes of cattle and they’re not going to get the proper education and I’m totally against that.”

“I think that closing those schools is going to produce a lot of tension, turmoil and injustice to a lot of the students. There are still, in 2009, unresolved territorial and boundary issues that have continued to stand in the way of our students. They need to be in an environment where they can stay and settle in from one to four years and that’s not the case right now.

“I think that they have closed enough and integrated enough of the kids into the city school system. I don’t think that they need to put any more kids from any more neighborhoods together. The rivalry has gotten way out of hand and I feel that closing more schools will cause more issues among the kids.
