‘Shorty-Rock’ brings national title back to the city of champions

Denine Bransom, a woman who’s come to be known as “Shorty Rock,” (as she prefers to be called), is thundering up the bodybuilding rankings and is ready to challenge the world’s best. Bransom, a Pittsburgh native, recently won a national bodybuilding championship and now has got her motivational radar locked onto the top professional shows.

Bransom isn’t exactly your typical girl next door (but she certainly would be a welcome addition to the neighborhood). She’s got exotic beauty, a very well-balanced physique and contest-winning muscularity, which was obvious when she won the overall ’‘09 OCB Yorton Cup National Bodybuilding & Figure Championships that took place last month in the Washington, D.C., area. Her look has given women’s bodybuilding a shot of sex appeal, and it’s redefining what a female physique artist should embody.

“I was a cheerleader in high school and a figure and fitness model,” Bransom said. “But after I ruptured a disk in my back I turned to bodybuilding.”

Every muscular inch of Bransom’s perfectly proportioned physique portrays a princess waiting to be crowned queen. Like a hooded cobra, her victorious, v-shaped back blends seamlessly into a tight, streamlined steel city waist.

Bransom’s amazing back is an incredible work of art that seems chiseled from granite on Mount Olympus. Now “Shorty-Rock” is stepping down to earth to wreak havoc in the professional ranks.

She exudes boundless energy to go with a strength level that would surprise many—she has performed 100 pushups in succession and one exercise Shorty Rock feels is irreplaceable is the chin-up.

“People are shocked when they see that I can do 10 sets of 20 reps of unassisted chin-ups,” Bransom said. “My best body part is my back and I’ve never seen anyone with a championship level back that hasn’t done chin-ups.”

Though turning professional doesn’t necessarily hold any special guarantee for success, Bransom’s immediate future is already looking sweet.

“Right now my diet consist of cupcakes,” said the national champion. “Right now Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday.”

She still lives in Pittsburgh where football is king and bodybuilding is unheard of. Through fanatical hard work and determination, along with the help of her trainer and father, Cecil Rice, she managed to reach her goal of competing in and winning a national championship.

Then, much like Cinderella, she found the magical evening was over and the next day she was back home in Pittsburgh just ordinary Denine Bransom.

“I couldn’t have done this without my God-given physical abilities,” said Bransom. “I couldn’t have done this without my father, (who is a certified personal trainer), and Sadiq Durham, my workout partner.”

Shorty-Rock has the blood, guts and overwhelming desire to drive herself to the absolute limits, when pretenders and wannabes cry defeat.

“Don’t cry to me,” said Rice. “I tell the people that I train to either do it or go home. Diehard people go everyday. Seven days a week. We are in the pit everyday between 10 a.m. to noon and I have anywhere between six to 12 people that I’m training. I tell Denine that we work hard because we are competing against the best in the world.”

Shorty-Rock has many accomplishments to her credit. She is a graduate of Duquesne University. She works 12 hours a day as a registered nurse and never misses a workout.

“I love my job. I work as a nurse from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.,” said Bransom. “And I work out between 10 a.m. to noon, seven days a week.”

Denine realizes that documentation beats conversation every day of the week.

“What helped me is that I recorded every workout for a year. I wrote down everything that I ate,” said Bransom. “I am all business about building my body to be the best bodybuilding competitor I can be. Bodybuilding has become my life. Training hard, eating clean, muscle growth and keeping my body strong and fit everyday.”

Bodybuilders are like actors on stage, with their physiques telling a story of dedication and sacrifice. The next act in Bransom’s storybook career might just conclude the way she mentally rehearses it—on top of the professional bodybuilding would where she belongs!
