Open house

DEC. 10—The Center for Women’s Entrepreneurship at Chatham University will host an Open House for the Mentoring for Women Business Owners Program from 5-7 p.m. at Chatham University, Woodland Rd., Oakland. This is event is for interested mentors and mentees to learn more about the program, to clarify the roles and expectations and to network. The event is free, but registration is required. Business series

DEC. 10—The Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh will host their Business Program Series from 12:15-1 p.m. at the Downtown & Business branch, 612 Smithfield St. The topic is “Census 2010: stand Up And Be Counted!” Benita M. Johnson, partnership specialist for the U.S. Census Bureau, Census 2010, will be the presenter and will discuss why it is critical for every resident in one’s area to be counted and how to help one’s community achieve this goal. Professional networking

DEC. 10—Jessica Lee will host “Entrepreneurial Thursdays” from 5:30-8 p.m. at Little E’s, 949 Liberty Ave., Downtown. This is a professional networking event with live jazz/R&B music. There is a $10 cover charge with a full bar and dinner selections. Business casual is the attire. No jeans or tennis shoes. Second step

DEC. 11—The University of Pittsburgh Small Business Development Center will host the “Second Step: Developing A Business Plan” from 7:30-10 a.m. at Mervis Hall, Roberto Clemente Dr., Oakland. Most financing options require a solid business plan. Individuals will learn what’s needed to know about operational and production planning, conducting market research, and creating financial spreadsheets to attract funding for your business. Breakfast series

DEC. 11—The Center for Women’s Entrepreneurship at Chatham University will host a Women’s Business Leaders Breakfast Series from 7:30-9 a.m. at the James Laughlin Music Hall, Woodland Rd., Oakland. The Women Business Leaders Breakfast Series will feature prominent women business leaders from the greater Pittsburgh region. The series will run the second Friday of each month and feature a presentation on topics such as marketing, financing, social media, negotiation, sustainability and innovation. This month’s featured speaker is Georgia Berner, president and CEO of Berner International Corp. and Berner Energy Recovery Inc. Registration is requested and the cost is $25 per series. Community marketplace

DEC. 12—Hosanna House will host a Community Marketplace from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at 807 Wallace Ave., Wilkinsburg. The marketplace is to develop a venue where people bring their families to visit and be entertained while shopping and networking. The marketplace creates an opportunity for economic development and cultural exchange. The marketplace will also be held Dec. 19. For more information, call 412-243-7711.

Business series

DEC. 17—The Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh will host their Business Program Series from 12:15-1 p.m. at the Downtown & Business branch, 612 Smithfield St., Downtown. The topic is “Addicted to Cheap Shopping? Why the Real Cost of Goods Keeps Going Down!” A 61-minute videodisc will take a meaningful look at the economics behind the inexpensive goods for sale in big-box stores and malls. It discusses the Wal-Mart effect, the no-frills philosophy of IKEA and the triumphs and woes of China in its role as the manufacturer for the world. This event is free and open to the public.
