Book drive

DEC. 17—The Jerome Bettis “Bus Stops Here” Foundation will host a Book Drive at 7:15 p.m. at Joseph-Beth Booksellers, 2705 East Carson St., South Side. This is an evening of fun for the whole family. Customers can purchase books for donation and receive a 10 percent discount and Joseph-Beth will donate 20 percent of their total sales made between 7-9 p.m. Bettis and his mother, Gladys, will read classic Christmas tales. Holiday bazaar

DEC. 19—The Business Women of the Ujamaa Collective will host the Kwanzaa Holiday Bazaar from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. at The Hill District branch of the Carnegie Library, 2177 Centre Ave. at Kirkpatrick , Hill District. Grief support

DEC. 21—Family Hospice and Palliative Care, in cooperation with Bidwell Presbyterian Church, will host a Grief Support Group from 7-8:30 p.m. at 1025 Liverpool St., North Side. Every third Monday of each month there will be a 90-minute session that is designed to help those coping with the loss of loved ones by finding support from professional bereavement specialists and fellowship with those going through similar experiences. Kwanzaa celebration

DEC. 26—The Community Empowerment Association will host their 2009 Kwanzaa Celebration at the Kingsley Association Community Center, 6435 Frankstown Ave., Homewood. There will be food, children’s activities, hip-hop and spoken word performances, specialty vendors, national and local artists, food, and an award ceremony. Sorority ball

DEC. 26—IVY Charitable Endowment of Pittsburgh, an affiliate of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., will host the Second Annual Precious to Cultured Pearls Presentation Ball at 6 p.m. at the Churchill Valley Country Club, 800 Beulah Rd., Churchill. The ball will feature special guests and honorary co-chairs Judge Dwayne Woodruff and his wife, Joy Maxberry Woodruff. There will be cocktails, hors d’ouvres, a special presentation and dinner and dancing. Tickets are $85 and proceeds will benefit programs and services to assist the community. Call 412-242-4179.

Kwanzaa celebration

DEC. 30—The Young Men and Women’s African Heritage Association board of directors will host Kwanzaa: A Pledge for Change Using the 7 Kwanzaa Principles from 4-8 p.m. at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church Banquet Space, 302 W. North Ave., North Side. The evening will feature a drum circle, African dance, raffles for children and adults, the history of kwanzaa, food, vendors, a fashion exhibit, and a scavenger hunt. Celebration of lights

ONGOING—Allegheny County Rite Aid and WTAE-TV will host The “Rite Aid Celebration of Lights” at 6 p.m. at Hartwood Acres, 215 Saxonburg Blvd., Pittsburgh. There will be holiday themed characters and displays. The cost is $12 per carload and the proceeds benefit the Salvation Army’s/ WTAE-TV’s “Project Bundle Up.” Call Ashley Flower at 717-975-5718.

Gingerbread display

ONGOING—PPG Place will host their Annual Gingerbread House Display and Competition at the PPG Place Wintergarden, 2 PPG Place, Downtown.  The houses will be on display and are available for purchase.
