Youth open house

DEC. 30—The Penn Hills branch of the YMCA of Pittsburgh will host a Youth Open House at 10 a.m. at 11870 Frankstown Rd., Penn Hills. Kids will get the chance to visit the facility’s’ new interactive gaming room, the XRKade. Kids 12-18 will be able to enjoy the new room after an orientation with a fit coach. Kwanzaa celebration

DEC. 30—The Young Men and Women’s African Heritage Association Board of Directors will host Kwanzaa: A Pledge for Change Using the 7 Kwanzaa Principles from 4-8 p.m. at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church Banquet Space, 302 W. North Ave., North Side. The evening will feature a drum circle, African dance, raffles for children and adults, the history of Kwanzaa, food, vendors, a fashion exhibit, a scavenger hunt and more. Noon year’s celebration

The Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium and Radio Disney will host a Noon Year’s Eve Celebration from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at 1 Wild Place, Highland Park. The Noon Year’s Eve Celebration is of Time Square proportions. There will be a count down to 12 o’clock noon with Radio Disney disc jockeys, noise makers and party hats. First night

DEC. 31—The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust will host First Night Pittsburgh 2010 at 6 p.m. at the Cultural District, Downtown. This is the largest Pittsburgh New Year’s Eve celebration. There will be more than 100 exhibitions, a showcase of music, dance and other entertainment. The evening will conclude with a fireworks display. This event is for the entire family. Tickets are $8. Job forum

JAN. 2—Sister’s Project Inc. will host a Community Jobs Forum from 1-3 p.m. at the Courtyard by Marriott Pittsburgh Shadyside Hotel, 5308 Liberty Ave., Shadyside. This is a local version of the White House’s Jobs and Economic Growth Forum. Special guests include lecturer, historian and foreign diplomat Akbar Muhammad and  Celeste Taylor of the Regional Equity Monitoring Project. This is free and open to the public. Spirit of King

JAN. 14—Port Authority of Allegheny County, the Kingsley Association and the Pittsburgh Pirates will host the 2010 Spirit of King Awards Ceremony at 10 a.m. at the Kingsley Center, 6435 Frankstown Ave., East Liberty. Forensic seminars

JAN. 15—The Duquesne University Wecht Institute of Forensics Science and Law will host the Forensic Fridays Seminar from 1-4:30 p.m. at Duquesne University, 600 Forbes Ave., Uptown. Each month there will be a seminar covering forensics in relation to topics such as medical malpractice, accident reconstruction and sexual assault cases. This series is geared toward attorneys, judges, physicians, nurses, law enforcement officers and athletic trainers. The series is worth credits.
