LOCAL MUSICIANS BENEFIT FOR HAITI—Local musicians will perform a benefit concert on Jan. 23, from 8-p.m.-midnight  to help raise funds for the people of Haiti after a devastating earthquake hit the country last week. The concert will be held at the Carnegie Library of Homestead Music Hall and will feature the Muddy Creek Blues Band, The Real Deal Band, Freedom, Patti Spadaro Band, Johnnie and Mustangs, and Man in the Street,with more performers to be announced.The concert is the brainchild of the Promise Group. All proceeds will benefit the Haitian people and will be donated directly to the Brother’s Brother Foundation for the specific and lone purpose of supporting the earthquake victims. The group of local musicians and performers are calling on all Pittsburghers, including additional artists who would like to contribute their talent to this worthy cause to come out and support the event. Hip-hop workshop

Arts Greenhouse and Westinghouse Lighthouse presents “Time to Build: An Hip-Hop Concert & Workshop” from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the Homewood YMCA, 7140 Bennett St., Homewood. This is a performance and workshop highlighting the community building potential of local hip-hop. Rhyme calisthenics

The Shadow Lounge presents “Rhyme Calisthenics 8” at 10 p.m.  at 5972 Baum Blvd., East Liberty. Some of the region’s emcees will take the stage and demonstrate their freestyle flowmanship with four rounds in this rap competition. The grand prize is $500 and studio time. The host for the evening will be Thelonious Stretch and DJ Huggy will be on the wheels. There will be a special performance by rapper, poet and songstress Queen Godis. ‘Raisin’

Duquesne University presents their Human Rights Film Series on Injustices and Indifference at 7 p.m. at the University’s College Hall, Room 105, 600 Forbes Ave., Uptown. The topic is “Sand and Sorrow.” It addresses ethnic genocide in the Sudan. David Rosenberg of the Pittsburgh Darfur Emergency Coalition will be the speaker. Tribute concert

The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra presents the 4th Annual “Tribute Concert: A Symphonic Celebration of African-American Culture” at 7:30 p.m. at Heinz Hall, 600 Penn Ave., Cultural District. This is a celebratory performance that showcases a fusion of musical styles that reflect the diversity of music. This year’s featured musician is Sean Jones, Lawrence Loh will be the conductor and the host for the evening will be Doris Carson Williams. Tickets range from $5-$25.
