All comedian/actress Mo’Nique could say when she won the Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Mary in “Precious” was “wow.”
After taking a moment to soak in her win, a poised but emotional Mo’Nique said, “Thank you very much to every member of the Screen Actors Guild. I am honored,” the poised comedienne said during the live telecast of the 16th annual awards ceremony, held at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.

The Screen Actors Guild Award is given to actors by actors. It is unique from other awards ceremony’s because voting is done by other actors who are paid members of the guild.
Mo’Nique beat out fellow actresses Penelope Cruz who starred in “Nine;” “Up In The Air’s” Vera Farmiga and Anna Kendrick; and Diane Kruger who starred in the Quentin Tarantino-directed, “Inglourious Basterds.”
This was Mo’Nique’s first SAG nomination and win. Earlier this month, she was named by the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress. Fellow actor Morgan Freeman presented Mo’Nique with her award.
Mo’Nique thanked the other, lesser known actors and actresses who made “Precious” a must-see movie.
“These are people that could easily be overlooked,” she said.
‘“Precious’” was also one of five movies nominated for Best Film Cast.
“Precious” represents people who are forgotten by society and it shows how life is hard and rich and whatever problems we face, life is: ‘Precious’,” said Gabourey Sidibe, who portrayed the title character in the film.
“Precious” was usurped by “Inglourious Basterds,” which took home the best film statuette. Other nominated films included “An Education,” “The Hurt Locker” and “Nine.”
Although Mo’Nique was the only African-American who won an individual award, other Blacks were part of the ensemble casts of shows and films that won Screen Actors Guild awards.
Fox Television’s “Glee,” which has one African-American cast member, beat out “30 Rock,” “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” ”Modern Family” and “The Office” to nab the trophy for Outstanding Comedy Ensemble.
Veteran actress Ruby Dee was nominated for best actress in a miniseries for “America.” Drew Barrymore won the award. Kevin Bacon beat out Cuba Gooding Jr. for Best Actor in a Mini Series. Bacon won for the movie “Taking Chances.” Gooding was nominated for the inspirational “Ben Carter Story.”
Sidibe was nominated for Best Female Actor for her phenomenal portrayal of the title character in “Precious.” Sidibe was nudged out by Sandra Bullock’s role in the “The Blind Side.”
