Census symposium

Family fun

FEB. 26—The Kingsley Association will host their Family Fun Fridays from 5:30-8:30 p.m. at 6435 Frankstown Ave., East Liberty. The fourth Friday of every month the association will have an evening of family fun that includes rock wall climbing, family line dancing, swimming and more. The event is free and open to the public. Art chat

FEB. 27—The William E. Anderson Library of Penn Hills and the Carnegie Museum of Art and Allegheny County Library Collection will host “Art Chat: Teenie Harris” at 2 p.m. at 1037 Stotler Rd., Penn Hills. Attendees will have the opportunity to view photographs from Harris’ 40-year career with the Pittsburgh Courier.  The collection of approximately 80,000 images is the largest single collection of photographic images of any Black community in the world.  Jara Dorsey, Community Outreach Specialist for the Carnegie Museum, will offer a presentation detailing Harris’ life and offering some of his most famous photographs, providing an opportunity to understand his incomparable techniques and see Pittsburgh through his eyes.  Admission is free. BHM program

FEB. 27—The McKeesport Heritage Center will host their 2010 Black History Month Program at 2 p.m. at the Heritage Center, 1832 Arboretum Dr., McKeesport. The guest speaker will be retired Justice of the Supreme Court of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Cynthia Baldwin. For more information, call 412-678-1832.

HIV/AIDS awareness day

FEB. 27—The Central Outreach Center will host a National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day event from 8 p.m.-1 a.m. at 1860 Centre Ave., Hill District. Attendees will be entertained with the soulful sounds of R&B group Artistree. There will be a buffet dinner offered. The cost is $15 at the door, but there will be a $10 discount for individuals who get tested. This is a non-alcohol event. For more information, call 412-471-9806.

First award

FEB. 28—JAS Interprises, P.S. will host a 2010 Black History Month “First Award” Banquet Dinner and Dance from 5:30 p.m.-1 a.m. at the Sheraton Station Square, 300 West Station Square Dr., Station Square. This is a Black History month program that honors outstanding achievements, educates about past achievements and celebrates the continuing struggles of the African-American race. The honorees include, Ophelia “Cookie” Coleman, Alex Johnson and Helen Faison. DJ Nick Nice will be featured with his oldies but goodies. For more information, call 412-758-7792.

Candidate party

MARCH 2—The 12TH Ward Democratic Committee will host a Meet the Candidate/Petition Party from 6-8:30 p.m. at Kingsley Association, 6435 Frankstown Ave., East Liberty.  The party will provide a cordial atmosphere for candidates to meet voters, present their platform and circulate their materials and petitions. It will also provide a convenient opportunity for voters to meet candidates, hear their views, ask questions and sign petitions for the candidate of their choice.  The event is free to the general public. Mardi Gras weekend

MARCH 12—The Iota Phi Chapter of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc will host the Cirque, De Omega Mardi Gras Weekend from 9 p.m.-2 a.m. at the Phase III, 7232 Hamilton Ave., Homewood. This event is a weekend of partying with the Ques. There will also be an Omega Mardi Gras Quesino Royale 2010 March 13 from 8 p.m.-2 a.m. at the Homewood Coliseum, 7310 Frankstown Ave., Homewood.  There will be fun, dancing, gambling and cash prizes. Celebrity roast

APRIL 16—The Hilton Hotel & Towers, will host the 12th Annual Mel Blount Youth Home All-Star Celebrity Roast at 6:30 p.m. at 600 Commonwealth Place, Downtown. The roast is a tribute honoring SuperBowl XL MVP/Wide Receiver Hines Ward. Dinner will be at 7 p.m. and this is a black-tie affair.
