Science fair
MARCH 13—Carnegie Mellon University will host the 26th Annual Charles Drew Science Fair at 9:30 a.m. at 5000 Forbes Ave., Oakland. This fair is for students in grades 6-12 and engages students to participate in meaningful scientific inquiries and to encourage long-term interest in careers in science and technology. Youth symposium
MARCH 13—Sigma Gamma Rohm Sorority Inc. will host their 13th Annual Nation Wide Youth Symposium from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Kingsley Association, 6435 Frankstown Ave., East Liberty. The theme is “H3: It’s All About Me—Healthy Choices, Healthy Living, Healthy Generation.” There will be an education and literacy workshop and a panel discussion. Jackie Robinson
MARCH 15—Actor Gregory Gibson Kenney will host “Jackie Robinson: A Study in Mental Fortitude” at 2:30 p.m. at the CCAC North Campus, Room 3002, 8701 Perry Highway, McCandless. The event will take place at the Psi Beta Kappa honor society induction ceremony. Kenney will be in character as Robinson and discuss how the athlete broke the color line in major league baseball and the psychological hardships he had to endure. Benefit dinner
MARCH 15—NEED will host their 47th annual NEED Scholarship Dinner at 6 p.m. at the Pittsburgh Hilton Hotel, 600 Commonwealth Place, Downtown. NEED is the region’s leading organization for the best and brightest African-American youths on the path for higher education. Students will be presented with scholarships. Community forum
MARCH 15—The American Civil Liberties Union of Pennsylvania and The Black Political Empowerment Project will host a Community Forum at 6:30 p.m. at St. James AME Church, 444 Lincoln Ave., East Liberty. This meeting is to inform residents about their constitutional rights and how to protect those rights in various situations. This is in response to the Jordan Miles incident. Grass roots alliance
MARCH 17—Community Empowerment Association will host a Grass Roots Alliance Strategic Planning Meeting at 6 p.m. at the CEA Culture Center, 7143 Fleury Way, Homewood. This alliance is to address the structural inequalities that exist and to come together to discuss and build around challenges, issues opportunities and experiences navigating through the mainstream system. Homebuyer workshop
MARCH 20—The Mon Valley Initiative will host their Homebuyer Education Workshop from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at 305 E. 8th Ave., Homestead. Presenters will discuss budgeting to purchase a home, shopping for a home loan, closing procedures and home maintenance.
