Chatham University Art Gallery presents “Mother, Maker, Model: Women in West African Art” from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. at Woodland Hall, Woodland Rd., Shadyside. This art exhibit is in celebration of its Global Focus Year of West. Students selected artifacts from the university’s Olkes Collection of African Art, which includes over 600 works. Poetry slam

The Fair Housing Partnership presents the 4th Annual Poetry Slam “From Words to Actions: Remaking Communities for Everyone” at 8 p.m. at the Kelly-Strayhorn Theater, 5941 Penn Ave., East Liberty. Local poets will speak about the need to create communities that are built on inclusion, diversity and fairness, that are free of discrimination and intolerance, and embrace change that is citizen driven. A $5 donation is suggested and refreshments will be served. There will be door prizes and a cash prize for the poets. Jazz appreciation series

The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust presents Ahmad Jamal and the MCG Jazz Orchestra at 8 p.m. at the Byham Theatre, 101 6th St., Cultural Trust. This concert is to celebrate National Jazz Appreciation Month. The legendary jazz pianist returns to Pittsburgh for a special Jazz Appreciation Month event. For part of the program, Jamal is joined by the MCG Jazz Orchestra for a rare and unforgettable opportunity to hear big band arrangements of his compositions. Kuntu series

The Kuntu Repertory Theatre presents “The Electronic Negro and Sister Son/ji” at 8 p.m. at the University of Pittsburgh’s Alumni Hall, 4227 Fifth Ave., Oakland. “The Electronic Negro” is about a diverse group of students in a college classroom with one student who is determined to monopolize the discussion and the teacher who cannot stop him. Sister Son/ji is a one-woman show that gives insight into the growth and life of a woman involved in the Black Power Movement. The performance will run through April 17.
