The white doors of Zion COGIC Church at 8304 Frankstown Ave. were open to welcome the community of Homewood/East Hills March 28.
Formerly New Beginnings Church in Braddock, Rev. Gregory Greene, led his family and ministry to a higher ground, which happens to be the community where he grew up. Those who attended the inaugural service were delighted and filled with hope for the area’s future.

Abandoned for many years, Zion COGIC’s structural condition was in disrepair. The rebirth of Zion was both economical and spiritual for Rev. Greene. At New Beginnings Church, 500 Camp Ave. in Braddock, Rev. Greene had to contend with a lease policy, while at the Zion location, after an extensive renovation, he has ownership of the church.
During a moment in the service he gave praise to the electrician/repairman who also begins his new business of building refurbishing. Reverend Greene said he feels a connection to his old neighborhood. “I really feel the East Hills-Homewood area needs good, strong churches,” he said. “We are going to reach out to the young men in the community and help those who are in trouble.”
Sermons delivered by Elder Mark Graves Sr. and Elder Ozwell Smith, exemplified the arrival of Zion Church. Soul healing songs of worship by the choir and band resonated through the old wooden timbers with sweet joy, as a rebirth to commitment of hope and healing in its new community.
