APRIL 23—The deadline for The New Pittsburgh Courier’s “50 Women of Excellence” Nominations is 5 p.m. This is your chance to select Pittsburgh’s powerbrokers in the arts, business, politics, non-profits, law, sports, philanthropy, health care, education and media. Nominations are welcome from individuals, businesses, professional/fraternal groups or neighborhood and community organizations. Anniversary celebration
APRIL 24—The Harmony Club of Homestead will host their 110th Anniversary Celebration and Hat Luncheon at 11 a.m. at St. John’s Cathedral Center, 210 Greentree Rd., Munhall. The theme is “Salute to Sisterhood: Still Lifting as We Climb.” Harold Hayes of KDKA will be the master of ceremonies and the keynote speaker will be Mary H. Page. There will be a hat show with LaMont Jones Jr. Tickets are $35 and proceeds will benefit the Dorothy Lance-Vivian Weems Scholarship Fund.
Fundraiser
APRIL 24—The McKeesport Heritage Center will host an Appraisal Fundraiser from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. at 1832 Arboretum Dr., McKeesport. The center will have special guest Jeff Poole from On The Diamond Antiques, to appraise items. The cost is $5 per item. Call 412-678-1832.
Shyne awards conference
APRIL 24—The Shyne Awards will host the Shyne Success Conference & Talent Competition from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. at the University of Pittsburgh, Fifth Ave., Oakland. The conference will include workshops on ethics and leadership, financial and media literacy.
Monthly meeting
APRIL 24—The Afro-American Historical & Genealogy Society Pittsburgh Chapter will host their Monthly Meeting from 1-3 p.m. at the Homewood Carnegie Library, 2nd floor, Hamilton Ave., Homewood. Community forum
APRIL 30—The 12th Ward Democratic Committee will host “HOLA: Holding Our Leaders Accountable” Annual Community Forum Part II from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Kingsley Association, 6435 Frankstown Ave., East Liberty. This is the second part of the forum where elected officials will give an account to residents of their leadership and what they have accomplished. The event is free and open to the public. Sister to sister seminar
MAY 1—The American Heart and Stroke Associations will host the Sister to Sister “Power Now Seminar” from 8 a.m.-1:30 p.m. at the Omni William Penn Hotel, 530 William Penn Place, Downtown. There will be health workshops, screenings, light breakfast and a heart healthy lunch. The honorary chair is Esther Bush, president and CEO of the Urban League. Keynote speaker will be Jeannette South-Pal, M.D., chair of the Family Medicine Department of the University of Pittsburgh. Registration is required by April 23 and the cost is $20. Empowerment gala
MAY 1—The Urban League Young Professionals of Greater Pittsburgh will host their 2010 Urban Empowerment Gala and VIP Awards Reception at 7:30 p.m. at the August Wilson Center for African American Culture, 980 Liberty Ave., Cultural District. This is an evening to commemorate the commitment to empower lives in the Pittsburgh region. The gala will begin at 9 p.m. and the mistress of ceremonies will be Danielle Nottingham and Tee Jay will be the DJ. Proceeds will benefit the ULYP’s programs and scholarship fund.
