Speak Out: There was only one homicide in Allegheny County in April. What do you think about it?

In April there was only one Black person killed in Allegheny County. We asked Pittsburghers what they thought and here’s what you said:

MALKIA PENN, DARNELL MAGWOOD and LOREN WEBB

“I think it’s good. Usually you hear every day on the news someone getting shot. That’s an improvement and hopefully it will stay that way. It’s sad how the Black neighborhoods are rundown because of the violence and I am impressed that there is less killing. Hopefully we can find way to keep the homicide rate down.”

“There was only one Black homicide and that is good and maybe relations in the Black community are improving. We need each other and maybe we are starting to understand that. I can’t really say that situations are improving for the Black community.”
Darnell Magwood
Hill District
Truck driver

“It’s still bad that one person died. You can say that it’s good that it’s not as high as usual. I send my condolences out to the family of the deceased.”
Loren Webb

Musician

“It’s great. Young kids aren’t killing each other. Too many young kids have guns. There is no respect now like there was 30 years ago. It is surprising that there was only one homicide. The summer is coming so you don’t know what is going to happen.”

“It is showing that things are improving. Maybe the young men are getting wise and know that they shouldn’t be killing each other. Maybe someone is working with them. I think it’s a shame that they are killing future doctors, lawyers and presidents. I hope the trend continues from one to zero.”
Pauline Kinsey
Homewood
Retired

“I think it’s great but I think it is so sad that we have to count our young Black men dying like this. Hopefully there will be a crack down and they (police) will be able to track down the ones doing the senseless killing. Even though there was only one homicide, it is still one too many.”
