Leadership summit

MAY 28—The African American Leadership Association and UPMC’s Center for Inclusion will host the 2nd Annual African American Leadership Summit from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Herberman Conference Center, 5230 Centre Ave., Shadyside. The theme is “Success in Leadership.” The summit will consist of various speakers, facilitators, panelists and the keynote speaker Jay Williams, Mayor of Youngstown, Ohio. There will also be a leadership development series certificate presentation award ceremony. Registration is required and the cost is $50. Diabetes education

JUNE 2—UPMC Passavant will host a Diabetes Education Series from 1-3:30 p.m. at 9100 Babcock Blvd., McCandless. The series will teach individuals and loved ones how to manage the disease with techniques suggested by the American Diabetes Association. Attendees will learn how to administer insulin and medication, monitoring blood glucose and proper diets and exercise regimens. Registration is requested. For more information, call 412-367-6887.

Founder’s day

JUNE 4—Community Empowerment Association Inc. will host their Founder’s Day Celebration from 6-11 p.m. at 400 Sherwood Rd., Wilkinsburg. Attendees will celebrate the achievements of the association and honor the founder, T. Rashad Byrdsong. Reservations are requested by May 28. Flea market/bake sale

NAACP meeting

JUNE 8—The Pittsburgh NAACP will host their Executive Committee and General Membership meetings at 7 p.m. at St. James AME Church, 444 Lincoln Ave., East Liberty. There will also be a meeting July 20 at the Hill House Association at 7 p.m. For more information, call 412-471-1024.

Health event

JUNE 12—Gateway Medical Society and the Pittsburgh NAACP will host a “Gateway to Wellness” from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Herberman Conference Center, Centre Ave., Shadyside. The free health event is geared towards African-Americans and includes free health screenings, workshops and a panel discussion from motivational health experts. Reservations are required by June 7. Book sale

JUNE 12—The Western Pennsylvania Genealogical Society of the Pennsylvania Department of the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh will host a Social and Book Sale from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. in the foyer of the Lecture Hall of the Library, 4400 Forbes Ave., Oakland. There will be a sale of gently used books on a variety of topics. Only cash will be accepted. The event is free and open to the public. For more information, call 412-622-3154.

Homebuyer’s workshop

JUNE 19—The Mon Valley Initiative will host a Pre-Purchase Housing Workshop from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at 305 East 8th Ave., Homestead. This workshop will promote homeownership in the Mon Valley through presentations made by mortgage lending and real estate professionals. The presentations will give information about lending products for low-to-moderate income first-time homebuyers that include a down payment and closing cost assistance.
