Youth health fair at Holy Rosary in Homewood

The Extra Mile Foundation of Pittsburgh hosted a Children’s Health Fair May 15, at the Holy Rosary School gymnasium in Homewood.

The fair, was open to all students in grades five to eight and their parents.

WISHING YOU WERE HERE—All the kids, McGruff the Crime Dog, Vince Simms and Karen Hall wave hello. Simms and Hall spoke at the event.

“We want students and their parents to learn how to be proactive in working toward a healthier body, mind and spirit,” said Karen Hall, event organizer for Extra Mile. “This gives children the experience of attending a health fair designed specifically for their needs.”

The Extra Mile Education Foundation supports the education of urban children in select Pittsburgh parochial elementary schools. The schools—identified by the Diocese of Pittsburgh—are in economically disadvantaged neighborhoods, and the students are primarily African-American and non-Catholic. Extra Mile is dedicated to sustaining these schools for their communities on an ongoing basis as a needed supplement to the financial commitments of the Diocese of Pittsburgh, the schools, and the parents and families of the children.

Among the scheduled activities were hip-hop aerobics, face painting, soul line dancing and health workshops for parents on the subjects of obesity and weight management and asthma.

The Extra Mile Foundation is receiving support for the Children’s Health Fair from UPMC Health Plan, Wendy’s, Daily’s Juices, Panera Bread, Del’s Restaurant, Whole Foods, Subway, Shaler Lounge, and Walmart.
