Speak Out: What impact do you think the race conference will have?

The University of Pittsburgh recently held a conference on a variety of topics affecting race relations in this country. We asked Pittsburgher their reaction to the conference. Here’s what you said:

“I think race in America is still a challenge, it’s an opportunity for us to have dialogue. But the real question is whether or not people care enough to behave differently as the result of a conversation. If they care enough to partner and collaborate with others and if they care enough to spread the word and communicate to people who weren’t there.”
Candi Castleberry-Singleton
Chief Inclusion and Diversity Officer, UPMC

“I don’t know. I would imagine that anything moving in that area is probably more positive than it is negative.”
Malcolm Blunt
Loan officer
Monroeville

“I think any thing will have an impact on race relations, if it would bring it to a more positive prospective than what it currently is, any type of talk would do.”
Mary Black
Dept of Aging
Monongahela

“I think any thing would have helped, there’s always somebody who has a racial remark against somebody. You have to be careful what you say these days. Yes, absolutely.”
Charles Smith
William Penn Hotel
Allison Park

“I think it’s probably a beginning, more of an awareness. I don’t know if there’s going to be an immediate impact. Maybe there’ll be an impact or whether there’ll be a change I think are two different things. I think it may make an impact as a lot more people may become aware of the disparities that weren’t before and that will begin the journey of making a change.”
Chancey Smith
Director of Equal Opportunity Employment at H.J. Heinz Co.
Point Breeze

“I think it will because of the way the economy is around here.”
Kevin Young
Security officer
Hill District
