Celebrity basketball event
JULY 3—B. Marshall and the Community Empowerment Association will host the DeJuan Blair and LaMarr Woodley Independence’s Day Celebrity Basketball Extravaganza event at 12 p.m. at the Peterson Event Center, 3719 Terrace St., Oakland. The event will showcase four games, which includes City High School stars vs. WPIAL stars, media and former pro and semi-pro players. Blair and Woodley will be coaching teams in the final game. Old school picnic
JULY 3—Ed will host the 6th Annual “Old School Get Together” from 1-9 p.m. at Mellon Park, Fifth and Penn Avenue, Point Breeze. Individuals and families are welcome to attend this alcohol free party to enjoy oldies music, good food and fellowship. Must bring own picnic basket, blankets and lawn chairs. Flea market
JULY 10—Citiparks will host a Flea Market from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. at Brookline Memorial Recreation Center, 1400 Block of Brookline Blvd., Brookline. Space is free, but everyone must bring his or her own table. For more information, call 412-571-3222.
Dance class
JULY 10—Roland Ford will host a Saturday Soul Line Dance Class and Detroit Ballroom Practice from 12-4 p.m. at the Wilkins School Community Center, 7604 Charleston Ave., Braddock. The class will give individuals an opportunity to review some of the popular dances of 2009, get good exercise and have fun. Wear comfortable clothes and bring water. Brainstorming
JULY 19—The Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh will host a Community Brainstorming Session from 7-9 p.m. at the Union Project, 801 N. Negley Ave., East Liberty. This session is to discuss what can be done to ensure the library remains operationally and financially healthy. Registration is not required and light refreshments will be served. Artistree
JULY 30—The August Wilson Center will host an Evening with Artistree from 6-10 p.m. at 980 Liberty Ave., Cultural District. Tim Stevens will be the master of ceremonies and special guests for the evening include Rodney McCoy, Flow Wilson and The Old School Band and Vanessa Campagna. Genealogy society meeting
JULY 31—The Afro-American Historical & Genealogy Society, Pittsburgh Chapter, will host their Monthly Meeting from 1-3 p.m. at the Homewood Branch of the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, 7101 Hamilton Ave., 2nd floor, Homewood. Every last Saturday of the month, historians, genealogists and laypersons of all races and ethnicities come together to trace the histories of families. Black family reunion
AUG. 6—The Community Empowerment Association will host the 7th Annual Black Family Reunion & Cultural Arts Weekend. The celebration will begin with a Peace ’N the Hood Basketball tournament and slam dunk contest at Kenard Field. There will also be a hip-hop symposium and African-American film showcase, family activities Aug. 7 at Schenley Park, a concert with Bobby V, an Old School Cabaret and more. ArtCity
