Prince, Michael honored, BET Awards sets record

(AP)—BET’s 10th anniversary celebration 2010 BET Awards drew enough viewers to top the 37th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards and make it the No.1 cable awards program for the fifth consecutive year.

Featuring performances and appearances from Chris Brown, Kanye West, Ludacris, Prince, Eminem, Chaka Khan, Patti Labelle, Usher, Alicia Keys, Drake and more, the program drew 7.4 million viewers during its initial airing June 27.

In comparison, the 37th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards, which gained viewers this year celebrating achievement in entertainment that same evening, peaked at just over 5.8 million (averaging 5.6 million) viewers.

“For 10 years, the BET Awards has always been about showcasing the best of entertainment, and last night we delivered,” said Stephen Hill, president of Music Programming and Specials at BET Networks in a statement late Monday. “The number of viewers who tuned in to see the BET Awards ‘10 is a testament to the all-star performances, artists and their music’s influence on our culture.”

While the show was a success, becoming the No. 1 cable awards show among adults 18-49 for the fifth consecutive year, it did take a fall from the 2009 awards, heightened as the first celebration of Michael Jackson’s life just days after his death June 25, 2009. That year, the BET Awards drew nearly 10.7 million viewers, the most ever for a cable- based award program.

In case you missed the initial airing of the BET Awards, which also awarded R&B singer John Legend a Humanitarian Award and Prince a Lifetime Achievement Award, BET will re-air the program July 2 at 8 p.m., July 5 at 8 p.m. and July 11 at 7:30 p.m.

The 2010 BET Awards took place at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, airing live, June 27, It was hosted by Queen Latifah.

Brown’s performance was one of his best but he cried all over the place. In the night of events there were other performances from Young Jeezy, TI, Kanye West and Travis Barker.

But Brown’s performance really had the crowd buzzing. Brown is really doing great and danced three Michael Jackson song’s but when he started to sing “Man in the Mirror” he broke down.

A host of music celebrities including Drake, Keys, West, B.O.B and Eminem, turned up to see Prince receive his lifetime achievement award.

The star-studded event, saw most of the above perform or accept an award for various achievements.

Keys performed with Prince, Eminem preformed his new single “Not Afraid” and collaborated with B.O.B on their single, “Airplanes.”
