Nation of Islam celebrate fathers

The Nation of Islam Muhammad Study Group #22 of Pittsburgh held their first Father’s Day Celebration at the Wyndham Hotel in Oakland, June 19.

The celebration began with greetings in the Muslim tradition of hugs and bows to Allah. The women were dressed in magnificent colorful dress gowns and matching head scarfs. While waiting for guests to arrive, entertainment was provided by Bashir & You Jazz Band, playing jazz and R&B favorites.

Several items of Muslim history and artwork were displayed for the evening’s auction. Opening prayer was given by community activist and spoken word recording artist Jasiri X, who also served as the evening’s master of ceremonies.

New Pittsburgh Courier columnist Hop Kendrick read a procla­mation from Alle­gheny County Executive Dan Onorato. Also in attendance were community activist Paradise Grey, CEA President Rashad Birdsong, spoken word artist Leslie 2X and Stacy Muhammad of the Muhammad Study Group #22 of Pittsburgh.

The celebration was capped off with The Father’s Day Community Awards presentation. Votes were counted and the winners were Jasiri X, runner-up and Father of The Year went to Hugh Blackman. Special thanks were given to the New Pittsburgh Courier, Hon. Minister Louis Farrakhan, Joshua Farrakhan, Mother Minerva Muhammad, Onorato, One On One Personal Fitness and Your Sister’s Project, Inc.
