Sims among first inductees into Pittsburgh Fashion Hall of Fame

Organizers of Pittsburgh Fashion Week, an annual event that will debut this fall, have announced the selection of six icons of fashion, style, and beauty as the first inductees into the Pittsburgh fashion Hall of Fame.

•Barbara Cloud, book author and retired award-winning fashion editor and columnist for Pittsburgh-area newspapers during a journalism career that spanned four decades.

•Joseph Orlando Sr., proprietor of Joseph Orlando men’s specialty store Downtown, for decades in local fashion retail, including nearly 30 at his store with more than three decades in local fashion retail.

•Naomi Sims, trailblazing Black fashion model who won national fame before dying in 2009. Though born in Mississippi, she grew up in Pittsburgh and graduated Westinghouse High School.

•Nijole Ungethuem, for decades of service in local fashion retail, including fashion publicity director for Saks Fifth Avenue, where she planned spectacular fashion events for charity. She currently works at Linda Bucci women’s boutique.

•Jane Vandermade, for her decades as an influential pioneer in fashion retail in the city and as a benefactor/patron of the local fashion industry. She helped change the face of fashion in Pittsburgh.

•Arnold Zegarelli, for decades of leadership and iconic status in the local hair and beauty industry, he is the region’s king of hairstylists. Formerly of premier salons, now working at Izzazu International Salon and semi-retired.

The induction will occur Oct. 3 at a luncheon at the Omni William Penn hotel, Downtown. Tickets are $40 and go on sale to the public in July. Pittsburgh native Tom Julian will be the master of ceremonies. He is president of New York-based Tom Julian Group global branding consultancy and has authored two Nordstrom men’s style books.

(The Pittsburgh Fashion Hall of Fame event will conclude Pittsburgh Fashion Week, which begins Sept. 27. It was founded by Miyoshi Anderson, a Pittsburgh-based national fashion model, to educate and entertain the public while supporting local fashion designers and retailers.
