Panel discussion
AUG. 6—The Community Empowerment Association will host a Hip Hop Symposium at 6 p.m. at the Kelly Strayhorn Theater, 5941 Penn Ave., East Liberty. This event is an intellectual discourse on the pros and cons of hip-hop as it affects the unit of the Black family and the community. Black family reunion
AUG. 6—The Community Empowerment Association will host the 7th Annual Black Family Reunion & Cultural Arts Weekend. The celebration will begin with a Peace N the Hood basketball tournament and slam dunk contest at Kenard Field. There will also be a hip-hop symposium and African American film showcase, family activities Aug. 7 at Schenley Park, a concert with Bobby V, an Old School Cabaret and more. Reunion kickoff
AUG. 6—The Alexander family will host a North Side Reunion Kickoff at 7 p.m. at the Gateway Clipper Fleet, 350 W. Station Square Dr., Station Square. It is a celebration and kickoff to the North Side reunion. The ticket includes an all you can eat buffet and oldies deejay. Unity gathering
AUG. 7—The Northside Oldtimers will host their 4th Annual Northside Oldtimers “Unity Gathering from 12-8 p.m. at West Park, North Side. This is a day of unity for North Siders young, old and in between. The event is in memory of Walter Butler and Reggie Ward. There will also be activities Aug. 8 from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. at the location behind the Aviary. Attendees will enjoy a weekend of no violence, games, music, food and activities for the entire family. AUG. 20—The Pittsburgh Pirates will host their Heritage Weekend Celebration. The celebration will feature a tribute to the Negro Leagues and players from the Homestead Grays and the Pittsburgh Crawfords. Police training
SEPT. 1—The Citizen’s Police Academy will host the Pittsburgh Police Training Academy from 6-9 p.m. at 1395 Washington Blvd., East Liberty. Every Wednesday, for 15 weeks individuals will learn what is needed to become a police officer.
