Bishop Eugene M. Thorpe passed away Aug. 7 after several years of health issues, his age was not given by the family. He was the founder of the North Side Institutional COGIC.
“He passed of natural causes, quietly with his family at his side,” said James Vaughn, husband of Bishop Thorpe’s daughter, Lisa Thorpe-Vaughn.

Bishop Thorpe founded NSI close to 45 years ago when he first moved to Pittsburgh. In 2006 Bishop Thorpe stepped down as pastor of NSI and promoted his wife, Lola Thorpe, from co-pastor to pastor.
The viewing for Bishop Thorpe will take place Aug. 13 from 3-7 p.m. with a celebration of life following from 7-10 p.m. The homegoing celebration will be held Aug. 14 at 10 a.m.
All events will take place at Ebenezer Baptist Church in the Hill District.
“It’s a homegoing celebration, it’s a graduation for him,” Vaughn said. “That’s what his whole life of preaching some 60 years was about—presenting Jesus to others so that their life could be changed and one day transcending from this life on earth to be in the presence of Jesus.”
