Certification & contracting

AUG. 25—U.S. Small Business Administration will host an 8(a) and HUBZone Certification & Contracting Workshop from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. at Riverside Center for Innovation, 700 River Ave., 1st floor Conference Room, North Side. Accounting for contracts

AUG. 26—The Government Contracting Assistance Center will host “Accounting for Government Contracts” from 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at the Regional Learning Alliance, 850 Cranberry Woods Dr., Cranberry. Seminar attendees will learn about special accounting regulations, standards and requirements for government contracts. Wessel & Company will present the seminar. Business series

AUG. 26—The Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh will host their Business Program Series at 12:15-1 p.m. at the Downtown & Business branch, 612 Smithfield St. The topic is “The Secrets of the Self- Made Millionaires.” The series will feature a 45-minute DVD with motivational speaker and author Brian Tracy discussing what several millionaires did to make their fortunes, how to motivate oneself, how to control one’s financial future and the qualities and skills that will guarantee success. Networking mixer

AUG. 26—The African American Chamber of Commerce of Western Pennsylvania and the Urban Lending Solutions will host a Special Networking Mixer Meeting from 5-7 p.m. at the Renaissance Pittsburgh Hotel, 107 Sixth St., Downtown. The theme is “Bringing to You Round Three: A Time to Get Connected.” There will be an informational reception and business card exchange; attendees should bring plenty of cards. Professional networking

AUG. 26—Jessica Lee and Pittsburgh Gateway Corp. will host “Entrepreneurial Thursdays” from 5:30-8 p.m. at Little E’s, 949 Liberty Ave., Downtown. The theme is “Arts & Innovation.” This is a professional networking event with live jazz/R&B music. There is a $5 fee. Business casual is the attire. No jeans or tennis shoes. Second step

AUG. 27—The University of Pittsburgh Small Business Development Center and the Institute for Entrepreneurial Excellence will host “the Second Step: Developing a Business Plan” from 7:30-10 a.m. at the university’s Mervis Hall, Oakland. Attendees will learn all that is needed to know about operational and production planning, conducting market research, and creating financial spreadsheets to attract funding for one’s business. Successful websites

SEPT. 2—The Saint Vincent College Small Development Center will host “Planning and Promoting Your Website” from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. at 300 Fraser Purchase Rd., Latrobe. Joe Polk of the Pennsylvania Technical Assistance Program will facilitate the seminar and discuss how to set up a business website or improve an existing one; cost of websites; development stages; templates and more. Small business training

SEPT. 7—The YWCA Greater Pittsburgh will host an Orientation for its Business Feasibility Fall Classes at 11 a.m. at 305 Wood St., Downtown. This is part of their small business startup training. This is a 36-hour program offered in cooperation with Community College of Allegheny County and designed for women who want to start a microenterprise. Classes begin at CCAC Sept. 14 and Sept. 15 at YWCA. The cost is $225 and includes program materials. For more information, call 412-255-6749.

PowerBreakfast

SEPT. 17—The African American Chamber of Commerce of Western Pennsylvania will host their PowerBreakfast Meeting at 7:30 a.m. at the Rivers Club, One Oxford Centre, 301 Grant St., Downtown. The special guest will be James Golding, Managing Director of Purchasing for FEDEX Ground. He will discuss FEDEX Ground as a company and their process for procurement of goods and services.
