Small business training

SEPT. 7—The YWCA Greater Pittsburgh will host an Orientation for its Business Feasibility Fall Classes at 11 a.m. at 305 Wood St., Downtown. This is part of their small business startup training. This is a 36-hour program offered in cooperation with Community College of Allegheny County and designed for women who want to start a microenterprise. Classes begin at CCAC Sept. 14 and Sept. 15 at YWCA. The cost is $225 and includes program materials. For more information, call 412-255-6749.

Finance seminar

SEPT. 8—The Center for Women’s Entrepreneurship at Chatham University will host a Finance and Business Seminar from 8-9:30 a.m. at Chatham University, Howe-Childs Gatehouse, Woodland Rd., Shadyside. This is the first of a four-part seminar series held in conjunction with Grossman Yanak & Ford LLP about finances, which is a critical part of business. The seminar will run every Wednesday throughout September. Registration is required and the cost is $20 per seminar and $65 for all four, which includes a continental breakfast. SEPT. 9—The Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh will host their Business Program Series at 12:15-1 p.m. at the Downtown and Business branch, 612 Smithfield St. The topic is “Marketing on a Shoestring Budget Using Social Media.” Shawn Agyman, director of marketing for SponsorChange.org, will discuss how, with the effective use of social media, one can leverage media attention, engage customers and market services. He will also use his company as an example of how this low-cost marketing strategy can benefit entrepreneurs in many types of business. This event is free and open to the public. SEPT. 16—The Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh will host their Business Program Series at 12:15-1 p.m. at the Downtown and Business branch, 612 Smithfield St. The topic is “Leveraging Online Social Media to Avoid Burnout in Volunteer Organizations.” Geri Puleo of Change Management Solutions Inc., will identify the unique challenges of volunteer leadership and will provide a concrete channel, strategy and the tools needed to harness social media technology that will engage members, reduce burnout and build a vibrant online community. PowerBreakfast

SEPT. 17—The African American Chamber of Commerce of Western Pennsylvania will host their PowerBreakfast Meeting at 7:30 a.m. at the Rivers Club, One Oxford Centre, 301 Grant St., Downtown. The special guest will be James Golding, managing director of purchasing for FEDEX Ground. He will discuss FEDEX Ground as a company and their process for procurement of goods and services.
