Lincoln splits homecoming series with Garfield

Lincoln hosted Garfield for their homecoming series at Chadwick Field on Saturday.

The two organizations from the Allegheny County Midget Football League split the series. Lincoln’s Twerps and Mighty Mites garnered two shutouts, 12-0 and 13-0, against a Garfield unit that usually dominates this series from top to bottom.

“We’re just glad that we were able to stay competitive,” said Jose Regus, a representative of the Lincoln organization who also serves as the league’s president. “It speaks to the progression of our organization. There were times in which they’d beat us every time. We’re determined not to have that happen anymore.”

Lincoln’s Cameron Jones, 9, shone as he was able to gain 178 yards on the ground and scored two touchdowns. Tyquei Howze, 8, added on five solo tackles to lead on defense at free safety.

Markquiz Martin, 14, was key for the Gators’ Midget’s club. He rushed for three touchdowns and one receiving.

“We expect to see big things out of him,” said Garfield representative Bob Jones. “He’s a freshman at Allderdice and should take the field for the Dragons next season.”

Garfield claimed two shutouts of their own, a 12-0 Termite’s win and a 33-0 beating of Lincoln’s Midgets.

“It’s always intense,” said Jones. “For us, this week it was about preparedness. Some guys came ready to play and some didn’t. That’s what it came down to.”

Lincoln got some key plays from Mighty Mites running back Shannon Campbell and Twerps lineman Dontre Jones.
