Heroes breakfast

SEPT. 30—The American Red Cross will host the Second Annual Heroes Breakfast from 7:30-9 a.m. at the Rivers Club, One Oxford Centre, 301 Grant St., Downtown. The breakfast is to celebrate the humble, everyday community heroes who have had an impact on their local communities. Tickets are $50. Heritage parade

OCT. 2—The African American Chamber of Commerce, Sen. Wayne Fontana and others will host the African American Heritage Day Parade at 11 a.m. at Mellon Arena, 66 Mario Lemieux Place, Uptown. Rain or shine, the parade will go from Mellon Arena to the August Wilson Center. There are performances, guided tours, activities for children and historical documentaries. March in Washington

OCT. 2—The NAACP and labor unions will host a March in Washington, D.C. The theme is “One Nation Working Together.” It is a multiracial, civil and human rights movement whose mission is to reorder our nation’s priorities to invest in our most valuable resource—our people. The Pittsburgh branch will take buses. The bus is free of charge, but must be reserved. For more information, call 412-471-1024.

Civil rights event

OCT. 4—Carlow University’s Grace Ann Geibel Institute for Justice and Social Responsibility will host “Until Justice Rolls Down Like Waters: Reflections on Race and the Civil Rights Movement from 3:30-5:45 p.m. at the University’s Kresge Theatre, 5th Floor, Grace Library, Shadyside. The event will offer video clips and personal reflections from Carlow’s Roots of the Civil Rights Movement Summer 2010 Tour. It will be followed by an open discussion. Meet and greet

OCT. 8—The Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council will host the PA Partners: Legislator Meet & Greet at 9:30 a.m. at the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts, 6300 Fifth Ave., Shadyside. This is a celebration for the art projects that have received state funding and an opportunity to learn about ongoing grass roots projects. OCT. 15—Talk Magazine will host an African-American/Latino Roundtable at the Crowne Plaza Hotel Philadelphia West, 4010 City Ave., Philadelphia. This free two-day seminar will feature several guests from the African-American and Latino community discussing issues and solutions for how to build a stronger community.
