OCT. 14—The Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh will host their Business Program Series at 12:15-1 p.m. at the Downtown & Business branch, 612 Smithfield St. The topic is “How to Prepare for a Behavior Based Interview.” Mary Jane Kolic of KJ & M Associates will discuss how to prepare for behavior and competency-based interviews, which are being used by many employers to reduce the costs and risks associated with poor hiring decisions. OCT. 15—The Western Pennsylvania Minority Supplier Development Council will host their 6th Annual Walk of Excellence Awards Gala and Silent Auction at 6 p.m. at the Fairmont Hotel, 510 Market St., Downtown. QuickBooks seminar

OCT. 19—Saint Vincent College’s Small Business Development Center will host a QuickBooks Made Easy from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. at 300 Fraser Purchase Rd., Latrobe. Dennis Piper and associates will present this seminar that is designed for those individuals and businesses that have recently purchased the accounting system and would like to become more efficient in processing their day-to-day work. PPT Night

OCT. 19—The Pittsburgh Young Professionals will host their PPT Night from 5:30-8 p.m. at Mortons Steakhouse, 625 Liberty Ave., Downtown. The evening will include a PowerPoint presentation about their membership’s various business development’s focus. This is an opportunity to enhance presentation and public speaking skills. The workshop will help users become more knowledgeable with the program and help them learn how to save time and money through its use. This is for Windows users only. OCT. 29—The University of Pittsburgh Small Business Development Center and Maiello Brungo & Maiello will host the Next Step: Employment Seminar from 7:30-10 a.m. at Pitt’s Mervis Hall, Room 104, Oakland. Michael Brungo and Chad Ellis will lead this seminar for small and start-up business owners that will focus on how to avoid common pitfalls related to building and maintaining a productive workforce. Featured topics include: effective hiring and firing, developing employee handbooks, use of independent contractors, how health care reform impacts the small and more.
