Civil rights conversation
OCT. 28—The Pittsburgh Area Jewish Committee will host “Civil Rights in an Increasingly Uncivil Society” at 7 p.m. at the Rodef Shalom Congregation, 4905 Fifth Ave., Shadyside. This is a conversation between Benjamin Todd Jealous, president and CEO of the NAACP and Rabbi David Saperstein, director and counsel of the Religious Action Center. Halloween party
OCT. 29—The Hill House Blakey Program Center will host a Caught Being Good Halloween Party from 3:30-5:30 p.m. at 1908 Wylie Ave., Hill District. Speaker series
OCT. 29—The Center for African American Urban Studies and Carnegie Mellon University will host their Speaker Series from 5-6:30 p.m. at the University Center, 5000 Forbes Ave., Oakland. Flu shot
OCT. 30—UPMC St. Margaret will host Free Flu Vaccinations from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. at Entrance B of the hospital, 815 Freeport Rd., Fox Chapel. The vaccinations are free to residents 65 and older or to those with chronic health conditions. Those 18-64 without chronic conditions must pay $15. Children under 18 will not be given the vaccine. Woman symposium
NOV. 6—The Softer Side Seminars Inc. will host the 3rd Annual Woman to Woman Empowerment Symposium from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Blakey Program Center, 1908 Wylie Ave., Hill District. Veteran’s day commemoration
NOV. 14—The Senator John Heinz History Center and Allegheny Cemetery will host a Ceremony to honor United States Colored Troops from the Civil War at 1:30 p.m. at Allegheny Cemetery, 4734 Butler St., Bloomfield. There will be a wreath laying ceremony to honor the hundreds of Black troops resting at the cemetery. The ceremony is part of a series of statewide commemoration and conservation events to mark the 150th anniversary of the Civil War in Pennsylvania.
Sock fundraiser
ONGOING—The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program of Allegheny County and the Allegheny County Library Association will host the Put Your Best Foot Forward fundraiser at all county public libraries. This is a fundraiser to collect socks for those in need. Collections will take place until Oct. 31. For more information, call 412-263-3184.
