My grandmother refuses to take my children!

(NNPA)—Dear Gwendolyn:

What happened to family love? This is my problem: I am 24 years old and have six children. My first child was born when I was 15 and my last child born is only 11 months old. Last month I asked my mother to take my children. She is 56. She refused. Then, I asked my grandmother to take them and she said no. My grandmother is 77.

Gwendolyn, I have a chance to get married to a nice man, but he doesn’t want my children. You would think that if my mother said no that grandma would have said yes. As a little girl, grandma used to adore me. This is probably my only chance to get married. With six children no man will marry me. It is terrible how parents and grandparents turn their back on their children these days. I think they are angry because I didn’t stay in good.

Don’t you think that’s terrible?—Janet

Dear Janet:

Let me tell you this: Mothers and grandmothers have a life. By the time they raise their own children, their body is not the same—energy level decreases. You must be out of your mind if you expect a 77 year old woman to care for six children—the youngest 11 months old just for the sake of getting a man.

Don’t you know anything about men? When you put yourself in a grown woman’s place, you have responsibility and you have it for life. Get back in school and pursue a good education. There is no excuse. You can receive a GED and then get a college degree on-line—all of this can be achieved without having to leave home.

Janet, men have married women with 10 children or more. A good man would not expect a mother to give up her children. Old people used to refer to that type of man as being trash. So, Janet, you have a man who is trash in a container—with the lid on top.
