According to a recent study, 72 percent of Black babies are born to unwed mothers, so we asked Pittsburghers what they thought and this is what you said:

“I think that at least 50 percent of the women should be married. Women without a companion could go the wrong way and struggle more than they need to. Children should have a father present and women with children should have a husband.”

“Parents have failed the children by not teaching them about what they should do in a relationship. In order to get a hold on our children, we have got to be responsible for our grandchildren. It does take a whole village to raise a child.”

“It’s sad that there are so many unwed mothers. We haven’t found the right type of man. I also think that our parents haven’t raised us to value marriage and take on the responsibility of our families.”

“I think it’s disgusting. You make a baby you should take care of it. Both the man and woman are to blame for not getting married. They must not truly love one another.”

“It’s horrible. Some males aren’t stepping up to the plate and some females aren’t doing their part either. If more people were to work together to be a strong couple, there would be more success when it comes to marriage.”

“It’s devastating. A lot has to do with absent Black fathers and the total percentage of Black men who are incarcerated. It goes back to slavery and has continued since.”
