Westinghouse (3-6, 5-9) overcame a 12-point third quarter deficit to edge Peabody (3-6, 4-7) on Jan. 28, outscoring the Highlanders 18-5 in the final stanza.

With the 55-54 win, the Bulldogs move into a fifth place tie in the League standings.

Senior guard Darelle Burton led all scorers with 19 points. Gary Herndon contributed 13, to round out those in double-digits for Westinghouse. Dontae Forte and Dameon Arrington led Peabody with 20 and 15, respectively.

The game marked the final regular season matchup in the history of these storied East-End schools. This is the final year for Peabody. The name will be changed to Barack Obama Academy next year with the athletic program merging with Milliones.

“It was up for grabs; bragging rights forever,” Westinghouse coach Ken Roebuck said. “As teenagers, most of them don’t understand what was up for grabs. It’s been our theme this year. That Westinghouse’s name will be engraved in history, in many respects.”

“It obviously hits home for their students, more than ours because they’re losing their school,” Westinghouse Athletic Director Muzz Meyers said. “We’ll be excited to have them come in and add to our program. It’s been an intense rivalry. Most of them are from the East End so they know each other, like a Pitt and Duquesne type of thing.”
