New Year’s Eve is fun time, but…’

(NNPA)—Dear Gwendolyn:

I have been married for 10 years and for nine of those years my husband has taken me to a party celebrating the coming of a new year.  However, last year when I was in the hospital, my husband went out with his friends in celebration.  In that one night of fun, he met another woman.  All during this year I have been fighting the battle to keep him.  Two weeks ago he told me that he was taking her out on New Year’s Eve.  In fact, he said he intends to leave me for her—saying he was in love.

Gwendolyn, we have children together.  Their ages are 2, 5  and 8.  He was supposed to be keeping our children on last New Year’s Eve, but he had taken them to my mother’s house.  What can I do?  I don’t want to spend New Year’s Eve alone.  I love my husband.—Margaret

Dear Margaret:

What’s love got to do with it?  You have spent all of 2010 trying to battle to keep him—and he has spent all of 2010 courting his new love.  I would like to think that the woman he met on last New Year’s Eve was a passing drunk affection.  You know…drinking and having a good time.

Let me tell you this:  It was okay for your husband to take the children to your mother.  At least he did not leave them at home alone. Margaret, never let a man know just how hurt you really are.  It is sickening to watch the TV talk shows showing women crying as if their life ended with losing their mate.  Think about it. To have a bad marriage is worse than not having a marriage at all.  Hold your head high and on New Year’s Eve keep your children up late to bring in the New Year.  A marriage license does not come with a ‘guarantee.’  When the New Year comes in have the mindset to get rid of the old—and seek someone new.
