Perry’s senior wide receiver Eric Frye didn’t think he’d have a chance to get a full football scholarship. Even with a senior season in which he caught over 30 passes for nearly 1,000 yards and nine touchdowns for the Commodores.
That was until NCAA Division II Seton Hill University Griffins in Greensburg, PA offered him exactly that.

“It was wild,” Frye said. “It’s like a fairy tale.”
Frye attended a different school for every year of his high school career. He started at Allderdice for the pre-engineering magnet, but his grades forced him to leave that program. Then Frye, who grew up in Garfield, tried his home school, Peabody, as a sophomore but the school was rough and his mother encouraged him to leave there, as well.
She based the decision her belief that Frye should have a stronger relationship with his father. So he headed to Germantown, MD to live with his father, his aunt, and uncle and attended Northwest High School for his junior year.
“Schools in Maryland were giving me offers, but by the time I’d get the information from my aunt, it was too late,” he said. “I feel like if I hadn’t come home and gone to Perry, I wouldn’t have gotten a scholarship.”
Despite putting up some of the best receiving numbers in the City League this year, Frye said that his best offers, before Seton Hill, were partial offers from Edinboro University and Indiana University of PA.
“Seton Hill just came out of nowhere and said that they would pay for everything that I might need,” Frye added. “That was definitely the offer that I wanted.”

1. Allderdice beat Oliver, 56-47, despite a game-high 28 points from Lemontae Harison for the Bears. Aaron Luster-White had a team-best 12 for the Dragons.
2. Perry defeated Schenley, 62—54, behind Marcus Smith’s 22 points. Bruce Grover (18) and Greg McGhee (11) also ended up in double-figures for the Commodores. Brandon Johnson led the Spartans with 28.
3. Westinghouse cruised past Langley, 83-58. Westinghouse had four players in double-figures led by David Pryor’s 24 points. Hasaun Blair’s 14 tallies paced the Mustangs.
4. Peabody knocked off Brashear, 62-54. Dontae Forte led all scorers with 25 points for the Highlanders. Ricky Gay scored 17 to lead the Bulls.

1. Allderdice defeated Oliver, 65-17. Sydnee Abernathy, Lanise Saunders, and Janay Bottoms all tied with a team-best 14 points for the Dragons.
2. Brashear topped Peabody 55-43, behind Nyasia Middleton’s 17 points. Semaj Pamplin matched that total for the Highlanders.
3. Perry survived Schenley in a double-overtime marathon that ended with a 33-31 final. Taylor Smith led all scorers with 19 for the Spartans and Latosha Fortson led Perry with 11.
4. Westinghouse beat Langley, 44-27. Roishay Woods and Kayla Key led the Bulldogs with 12 each. Lawanda Pearson led the Mustangs with 9 points.
