Pink and green were on the scene

The news media overwhelms us every day with negative detrimental stories that have us questioning GOD, when will it end?

Infrequently there are some positive events focused on, and this week’s column is about one. On Feb. 27, New Destiny CME Church at 1018 Bidwell St. (North side) was the host church for AKA Sorority’s Founders Day.

It was not only a wonderful sight to see these professional women in attendance at our church, but a wonderful feeling having people who have made and act out their commitment to the service of people.

I did a little research on their history and found out AKA Sorority was founded in Washington, D.C. on the campus of Howard University in 1908 as an organization comprised of professional, distinguished women who have dedicated themselves to improving the quality of life for citizens worldwide and the promotion of peace.

There have been a number of famous sorority sisters, but I would rather focus on the kinds of services provided by Alpha Kappa Alpha over the years.

(1) In the 1930s and ’40s they mounted Health programs that gave services to thousands of Black Families in the Mississippi Delta.

(2) The were first in 1950 to receive a contract for Job Corp. Center in Cleveland, Ohio (1950-1980).

(3) From 1908 until 2011 the Alpha Kappa Alphas have provided programs in education, health, economic development, the arts, global leadership and every positive element to benefit the Black family.

I conclude this column with a quote form Norma White, Supreme Basileus of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc.: “In the years to come AKA will continue to assist women who over the world are seeking a better life, to work, to try, and ultimately, to reach their goals. AKA takes great pride in its record, to treasure the past is to enrich today and strengthen tomorrow. We will move forward with vigor, blazing new trails for our people and for the Alpha Kappa Alpha.”
