APRIL 6—The Cancer Caring Center will host an African-American Women’s Breast Cancer Network Group from 6-7 p.m. at the East Liberty Carnegie Library, 130 S. Whitfield St., East Liberty. This is a support group for African-American women breast cancer patients and will be led by Yvonne Durham, a local advocate and survivor. Valedictorians

APRIL 7—The Westinghouse Alumni Association will host an honorary ceremony for the first and second Black valedictorians from 1-3 p.m. at 1101 N. Murtland Ave., Homewood. The ceremony is to honor Sophia Phillips-Nelson, Ph.D., and her sister Fanetta Jannie Mae Nelson-Gordon, the first and second Black valedictorians of the school. National summit

APRIL 7—The National Council for Urban Peace and Justice will host the 2011 National Urban Peace and Justice Summit at Bidwell Presbyterian Church, 1025 Liverpool St., North Side. The theme for the three-day summit is “Drugs, Violence and Mass Incarceration.” There will be various presenters, speakers and panelists. APRIL 8—The Mel Blount Youth Home will host the 13th Annual All-Star Roast at 6:30 p.m. at the Wyndham Grand Pittsburgh Hotel, 600 Commonwealth Place, Downtown. This year’s roast and tribute will honor Former Pittsburgh Steelers Running Back Jerome Bettis. Proceeds will benefit the Mel Blount Youth Home. Violence reduction

APRIL 10—The Pittsburgh Interfaith Impact Network, the Black Political Empowerment Project/Coalition Against Violence and CeaseFirePA will host a Gun Violence Reduction Sunday at local churches. Leaders of local churches will sermonize on the threat of gun violence, and engage their congregations on the issue. The message will be a re-commitment to efforts in Pittsburgh.
