Hill House brings doo-wop to Kaufmann Center

The Hill House Kaufmann Center presents a one-night performance by Jerry Lawson and Talk of the Town, an a cappella group led by the famed soul vocalist on May 6. This is the first event produced in a new partnership between the Hill House Association and the Kelly Strayhorn Theater to provide high-quality and affordable arts programming for the newly restored Kaufmann Center in Pittsburgh’s Hill District.

Known widely for their hit performance on NBC’s “The Sing Off,” Jerry Lawson and Talk of the Town joined together just recently after years of producing groundbreaking music separately. Lawson, former producer and lead singer for the legendary soul group The Persuasions, has worked with Ray Charles, The Rolling Stones, Liza Minnelli, and other internationally-acclaimed musicians throughout his 50 year musical career. Their debut album features a cappella covers of a wide variety of artists from Louis Armstrong to the Dixie Chicks.

“Jerry Lawson and Talk of the Town harkens back to street corner performances of the ’50s and ’60s with a modern twist due in part by their popular performance on ‘The Sing Off,’” says Kelly Strayhorn Executive Director Janera Solomon.

Kaufmann Center has just undergone a multi-million dollar renovation as part of a capital campaign that has raised more than $10 million dollars for the Hill House’s six-building campus in the Hill District.

The partnership between the Hill House Association and the Kelly Strayhorn Theater will bring fresh locally-and nationally-acclaimed performers, artists, and speakers to the Elsie Hillman Auditorium located in the Kaufmann Center.

Future events in the season include a two-day Juneteenth celebration with indoor and outdoor performances and activities for the whole family. Capping the celebration is “Hurricane Lounge at the Kaufmann” a series featuring local jazz artists from the Hill District and greater Pittsburgh.
