Wealth of resources available for diabetes information

Greater Pittsburgh has a wealth of resources if you’re looking for more information about diabetes, its prevention or health and wellness programs. The following list is just a starting point:

USDA

THE UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF ­AGRICULTURE launched a new guide to healthful eating this year, and the guide and other helpful information can be found at https://www.choosemyplate.gov/.

THE CENTERS FOR HEALTHY HEARTS AND SOULS has free diabetes support groups and education for people who have or are at risk for developing diabetes and for their families. It also offers a Healthy Lifestyles Fitness Program at participating churches and community sites.

THE HEALTH AND WELLNESS CENTER AT HOSANNA HOUSE IN ­WILKINSBURG provides health advisors, workshops and classes that focus on obesity, nutrition and high-risk diseases. It also has a fitness center.

THE YMCA OF GREATER PITTSBURGH offers health and wellness programs and fitness centers in several locations. Many locations also have Child Watch, a supervised program that provides children with a variety of activities while you exercise.

PITTSBURGH’S STRIP DISTRICT is a great place to find fresh produce at affordable prices. The historic market district is northeast of downtown between 16th and 22nd streets, with major thruways on Smallman Street, Penn Avenue and Liberty Avenue.

THE CARNEGIE LIBRARY OF PITTSBURGH has 20 locations throughout the city. Use the library to help you eat right and stay fit by accessing books about healthy eating, cookbooks for recipes or exercise videos. Librarians are always there to assist you.

THE ALLEGHENY COUNTY HEALTH ­DEPARTMENT has many resources listed on its Web site. Visit www.achd.net, and under “Divisions” click on “Human Health” and then “Chronic Disease.” Here you will find resources about healthy eating on a budget, a guide to local diabetes resources organized by neighborhood and tips for dining out. You will also find the Health Department’s guide to health care resources for the underinsured and uninsured. If you don’t have a computer at home, visit your local library to access these materials.
