On Oct. 20, at the Churchill Valley Country Club, Addison Behavioral Care presented the Anchors Away Gala, 2011.
The evening event brought dozens together to break bread and highlight the work of local news anchors that diligently provide Pittsburgh with information about our communities, never revealing the tremendous work that goes on behind the scenes.
On this night, ABC highlighted the work of several quiet soldiers that provide support to those with multiple barriers to success. The evening began with a welcome reception and a delightful dinner served by the Churchill Valley Country Club staff. Chris Moore, from WQED, PCNC and KDKA radio, was a warm and comical host.

This year’s award winning anchors included Kelly Frey, WTAE, for her unwavering commitment to the community that goes beyond reporting the news; Jonas Chaney, WPXI public affairs director, who provides space for the community with Talk Pittsburgh, as well as being involved in various charitable events and organizations; and Mike Clark, WTAE News. Clark serves as board president for Catholic Charities Pittsburgh and volunteers for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Mercy Hospital Foundation and Greater Pittsburgh YMCA.
For outstanding charitable work in the community, numerous awards were presented. The “I” in Charity Award was presented to Chuck Adreon, director in the North America Controlling Organization Bayer Material Science.
The Individual Community Anchor Award went to Carena Phillips, director of Career & Workforce Development Center East YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh.
The Voice of the Community Award was presented to WAMO 100.1 FM and was accepted by Laura Varner-Norman.
And the “O’ in Community Award was presented to the Dignity & Respect Campaign at UPMC Center for Inclusion; it was accepted by Candi Castleberry-Singleton of UPMC Center for Inclusion.
Bernadette Turner, executive director of Addison Behavioral Care, says their mission is to provide culturally sensitive services to individuals and families, helping them to focus on their quality of life; specializing in substance and abuse prevention, intervention and treatment.
