Brown bag lunch

NOV. 9—Volunteers of America of Pennsylvania will host its Brown Bag Lunch series from 12-1 p.m. at 1650 Main St., Sharpsburg. The topic is “How to Become Bankable” with Consultant Melanie Ansell of My Business Builders, LLC. This will be an interactive approach to the C’s of Credit. Ansell will discuss what they are, what they mean, how to apply them to one’s business and how the rules of good banking have changed. The event is free. Business symposium

NOV. 10—The Beard Institute of Duquesne University’s Palumbo-Donahue School of Business will host is “Sustainable Business: Responsibilities & Results” Symposium from 8 a.m.-2:30 p.m. at the Fairmont Hotel, 510 Market St., Downtown. Dr. Peter Senge will be the keynote speaker and will feature other business figures. The symposium will focus on the critical importance of sustainable business practices. Breakfast series

NOV. 11—The Center for Women’s Entrepreneurship at Chatham University will host a Business Leaders Breakfast Series from 7:30-9 a.m. at the James Laughlin Music Center, Woodland Rd., Shadyside. The title is “Investing for Your Future: A Necessity, Not a Luxury” and will be lead by Kristina Watts, a Wall Street Veteran, and Helen Collins, relationship manager at PNC Wealth Management. Pretty in pearls

NOV. 12—Women Entrepreneurs of Pittsburgh will host “Pretty in Pearls” A Salute to Michelle Obama from 5-9 p.m. at Savoy Restaurant, 2623 Penn Ave., Strip District. This is a networking and recruiting event with special guest speakers in the areas of inspiration, insurance, finance, education and health. A black dress and pearls are required. NOV. 17—The Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh will host their Business Program Series at 12:15 p.m. at the Downtown & Business branch, 612 Smithfield St., Downtown. The topic is “Shop ‘Til You Drop: The Crisis of Consumerism.” This 52-minute documentary will provide a fascinating examination of the social, psychological and environmental costs associated with the never-ending pursuit of material happiness. Diabetes workshop

NOV. 17—The Business Institute of the African American Chamber of Commerce of Western Pennsylvania will host “Diabetes: The Silent Killer, Self Management of a Chronic Disease” from 3-5 p.m. at WQED Multimedia, 4802 Fifth Ave., Oakland. This event will feature a special film presentation on the symptoms of diabetes and the impact it has on people of all ages. Terri Seidman and Loren Haley, J.D., give a testimony on the impact the disease has had on them. Reservations are required by Nov. 15. First step

NOV. 23—Duquesne University’s Small Business Development Center will host “The First Step: Business Start-Up Essentials” from 9:30 a.m.-12 p.m. at the University’s Rockwell Hall, 600 Forbes Ave., Uptown. This is a workshop for entrepreneurs without previous business experience or new business start-ups. After the workshop attendees will be able to meet with a consultant.
