Education conference
NOV. 12—The Hill District Education Council will host the 3rd Annual “Summoning the Village” Education Conference from 9:30 a.m.-2 p.m. at Milliones U-Prep, 3117 Centre Ave., Hill District. This is to empower parents and the community to create a culture of educational excellence. Topics to be discussed include, bullying, raising an African-American male child, mentoring and mental health concerns. Childcare, breakfast and lunch will be provided. Collards cook-off
NOV. 12—Braddock Youth Project will host a Collards Cook-off from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Community Center, 416 Library St., Braddock. The cost is $5 to participate in, eat at and vote on the collards and sides. Ribs will also be available. Proceeds benefit the BYP’s garden efforts. Cabaret
NOV. 12—Guys and Dolls Social Club will host its Thanksgiving Cabaret from 7 p.m.-12 a.m. at St. Lawrence O’Toole, 5323 Penn Ave., Garfield. The event will feature entertainment by DJ Tricky Ricky. Open House
NOV. 15—The Community College of Allegheny County will host its Enrollment Express Days at 9 a.m. at the Allegheny Campus, Foerster Student Services Center, 808 Ridge Ave., North Side. This is an open house event to make signing up for classes easier. Prospective students can meet with CCAC representatives from registration, advisement, financial aid and admissions and ask questions, take placement tests and apply for financial aid. Community sessions
NOV. 15—GTECH Strategies, ACTION Housing and People’s Natural Gas will host the Energy Conservation Education Project from 6-8 p.m. at the Homewood YMCA, 7140 Bennett St., Homewood. The project is a community outreach and educational effort to provide consumer education, sustainability education and hands on training for homeowners to reduce energy use and save money on utilities. This four-week session will be every Tuesday through Nov. 15. Attendees will receive a certificate and gift basket for attending all food and refreshments will be served. Registration is required. NOV. 16—Passavant Hospital Foundation and UPMC Passavant will host its 2011 Healthy Living Seminars at 12:30 p.m. at the Senior Center, Cranberry Township Municipal Building, 2525 Rochester Rd., Suite 400, Cranberry. This is part of the Extending the Care ETC program series and the topic is “Healthy Living with Diabetes.” The guest speaker will be Patrick McCarthy, RN, director of the Healthy Lifestyles Center and diabetic educator for Passavant.
