JAN. 12—The Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh will host their Business Program Series at 12:15 p.m. at the Downtown & Business branch, 612 Smithfield St., Downtown. The topic is “A Guide to Public Benefits.” Frank J. Pistella, a public benefits attorney for Neighborhood Legal Services Association, will discuss those programs funded by the government that help individuals and families in need. Women Breakfast Series

JAN. 13—The Center for Women’s Entrepreneurship at Chatham University will host the Women Business Leaders Breakfast Series from 7:30-9 a.m. at the university’s James Laughlin Music Hall, Woodland Rd., Oakland. The topic is “Social Media Success Stories.” The event will include a panel of women entrepreneurs who have mastered social media, building a customer base and maintaining virtual relationships by engaging, informing and connecting through social media outlets. JAN. 19—The Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh will host their Business Program Series at 12:15 p.m. at the Downtown & Business branch, 612 Smithfield St., Downtown. The topic is “Build Your Business Using ‘Every Door Direct Mail’ an Exciting Shipping Solution from the US Postal Service.” Michelle Dugas, business development specialist for the US Postal Service, will discuss an efficient way to promote one’s services by getting their marketing message directly into the hands of customers while reducing the mail preparation costs associated with it. She will also show attendees how this new service can help build more traffic, find new customers and increase revenue. This event is free and open to the public. Business Development Seminar

JAN. 20—Duquesne University’s Small Business Development Center will host its First Step: Business Start-Up Essentials seminar from 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at 108 Rockwell Hall, 600 Forbes Ave., Uptown. This seminar is for individuals with no previous business experience and will discuss topics, such as business structure and formation, employee issues, financing options, taxation requirements and more. Small Business Basics

JAN. 21—SCORE Pittsburgh will host its Small Business Basics Workshop from 8:30 a.m.-1 p.m. at the PNC-YMCA, 2nd floor, 226 Fifth Ave., Downtown. This workshop is facilitated by working professionals and helps to get new businesses off to the right start. Topics that will be covered include business plan development, record keeping, taxes, financing, marketing and legal aspects. Campaign Training

JAN. 21—The Pennsylvania Center for Women and Politics at Chatham University will host its Ready o Run Campaign Training for Women at Chatham University’s Mellon Hall, Woodland Rd., Oakland. This is a bi-partisan program for women who want to run for office, seek higher office, work on a campaign, get appointed to office or learn more about the political system. There will be training sessions and networking opportunities. Registration is required and if done before Dec. 15 the cost is $50 and if done after, the cost is $65.
