Leadership/Diversity Awards

JAN. 13—Coro Center for Civic Leadership in Pittsburgh will host its 5th Annual Martin Luther King Leadership and Diversity Awards from 5:30-8:30 p.m. at Heinz Field, 100 Art Rooney Ave., North Shore. The awards are a display of the best the Pittsburgh region has to offer in leadership and diversity. The keynote speaker for the event will be Rich Fitzgerald, county executive-elect and Lynn Cullen will be the emcee. Registration is required. MLK Celebration

JAN. 15—Temple of Sinai will host a Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration at 3:30 p.m. at 5505 Forbes Ave., Squirrel Hill. The event will feature guest speaker John Jackson, president of The Schott Foundation For Public Education in Massachusetts; several musical selections from various local choirs; a question and answer portion; and refreshments. Unity Breakfast

JAN. 16—The North Hills Anti-Racism Coalition will host its 12th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Unity Breakfast at 8:30 a.m. at LaRoche College, Zappala Student Center, 9000 Babcock Blvd., North Hills. The theme is “Honoring Diversity in Our Community.” The guest speaker is Marcus Rediker, PhD, of the University of Pittsburgh, and the Spirit of Unity Award will be presented to the Indian Cultural Association of Pittsburgh. Commemorative ­Service

JAN. 16—The Wilkinsburg Ministerial Association will host a March and Commemorative Service at 10 a.m. at Deliverance Baptist Church, 812 Swissvale Ave., Wilkinsburg. This is in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the contributions given to the American people during the Civil Rights Movement. MLK Celebration

JAN. 16—The Children’s Museum will host its Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration at 11 a.m. at 10 Children’s Way, Allegheny Square, North Side. The day of events includes a “King for a Day” tribute by the Saturday Light Brigade Radio Show, which is a five-hour marathon of participatory readings of the speeches of Dr. King. There will also be a one-man show, “I Have a Dream: A Conversation With a Friend,” by Actor Greg Kenny. For more information, call 412-322-5058 ext. 240.

Many Hands

JAN. 16—East Liberty and the Kelly Strayhorn Theater will host “Many Hands: A Celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.” from 12-4 p.m. at 5941 Penn Ave., East Liberty. The event is a family-friendly day of activities and performances celebrating the people that held hands in peace marches during King’s life. There will be performances and a march. Judge Clark Honored

Jan 16_The Homer S. Brown Division announced that it will present the Honorable Kim Berkeley Clark with the “Drum Major for Justice Award” at its Thirteenth Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Prayer Breakfast. The event will be held on Monday, January 16, at Mount Ararat Baptist Church, 271 Paulson Avenue in East Liberty.  A buffet breakfast will be served beginning at 7:30 a.m.  The award program will follow promptly at 8:30 a.m., and will last until approximately 9:15 a.m.  Harold Hayes, reporter at KDKA-TV, will serve as the moderator. The event is free and open to everyone!

King Celebration

JAN. 17—The Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh East Liberty Branch will host “School Age Fun: Happy Birthday Martin” as a part of its Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration at 4 p.m. at 130 S. Whitfield St., East Liberty. Children ages 6 to 10 will celebrate the life of Dr. King through stories, the making of a peace flag and more. For more information, call 412-363-8274.
